There is a continuing need for student employees in the CS Department and elsewhere at the CSUF campus.
The first step in the hiring process is to join the pool of applicants. As positions become open an administrator will contact a person in the pool with a job offer. Be aware that there may be a time delay between joining the pool and a job offer. That delay can be as long as 3 or 5 months sometimes. If you are somewhat interested you should join one or more of the pools now. If a job offer comes to you, you may decline it later if you have changed your mind. There is no loss in joining a pool now.
Here is a link to the job pools of the CS Department and some other departments as well.
The resume plays the important role of conveying your biography to a future employer. Here are some ideas to create a resume that rises above the competition.
Make a project during your university period that showcases your knowledge and skills. Choose the best project you have worked on in one of your classes. Enhance that project to make it look professional. Place captions under illustrations. Subdivide it into modules or chapters or sections. Give it a table of contents at the beginning and references at the end. Put an intellectual property open license on it. Make it look professional. Save it in pdf form. Include a short description in your resume.
Show social awareness. You are not a machine that lives in technology 24/day. Show the employer that you do human things too. Volunteer at a local Red Cross center on a couple Saturdays preparing bandages for injured patients at clinics. Volunteer at a local city library to return books to shelves. Volunteer at CSUF to help during NSO Day, Welcome to Fullerton Day, or Transfer student day. Those events always need volunteers and they only cost you 3 hours on a Saturday morning. Don't forget to put it in your resume.
Do something for a club in the CS Department. Just being a member is too blase. Do something. Volunteer to help the party committee carry the 12 boxes of pizza from the parking lot to the party room. Volunteer to train newbies at the Linux Fest sponsored by the computer clubs. The party only lasts 4 hours but the volunteer help new learners in the crowded room become familiar with their new Linux distro. Don't forget to put it on your resume.
Get a minor in a related major. Try Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering or Math. A minor on your resume puts you ahead of the competition. In the case of engineering and math some courses may double count for your CS major and for the minor. Don't do a minor if it will delay your graduation. If you plan ahead you may succeed in accomplishing both major and minor concurrently, but this does required planning.
Attend a computer convention. In Southern California there is the Linux Scale convention each Spring in LA county. That show attracts 10 to 20 thousand people over a 3 day period. In Orange county there are smaller User Groups that meet monthly or semi-annually. Go visit one time. Put it on your resume.
Get an internship. The hard part is looking for the job. The good part of an internship is that you are not competing against experienced old programmers. You're competing against other students. The hard part is applying at dozens of companies for the position. If you do get hire be sure to enroll in EGGN495 and earn 3 units that will be applied to your CS degree requirement. Oh yes, did I say it already, put the internship on your resume.
Those are some starting ideas. There are more little things you could do, but here I have mentioned the 6 pillars of preparation for the glorious career that you hope to have. Take care of yourselves.
