One of the challenges with language learning is that if you're not using it, you're losing it. It doesn't have to be a lot, but if you can even do a few minutes every day during the summer when you're not in class, it'll keep it fresh in your brain so that it doesn't feel like you're moving through sludge to get your Spanish to work in the fall. (That said, I know it's summer and the best thing for your brain might be a break, so whatever is best for you, do it and enjoy yourself.)
Summer Spanish challenge
To encourage students to keep up their Spanish over the summer, I started issuing the summer Spanish challenge 3 years ago. If you win the summer Spanish challenge, I will make you a homemade dessert or cheese dip. I make amazing pies, cookies, mints, cakes, etc, so you can choose from any of the following:
Key lime pie
Lemon meringue pie
French silk pie
Brownies
Scotcheroos
Rice Krispy bars
Fruity Pebble bars
Cream cheese mints
Oreo balls
Frosted sugar cookies
Shortbread cookies
Chocolate cheesecake
Red velvet cake
Apple sheet cake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting
M&M brownie cookies
Peppermint brownie cookies
Cheese dip
How do you win?
Join our class on Duolingo (see links below). The challenge starts on Monday, May 11 for graduating seniors and Friday, May 22 for grades 9-11.
Everyone who reaches the Duolingo minimum point total (1500 XP) will receive a Duolingo water bottle sticker.
If you meet the required Duolingo minimum point total (1500 XP) and earn more points than anyone else in your level, you win a homemade dessert! Each level has its own competition, so you're only competing with other students in your level of Spanish.
In it to win it? One grand prize winner can win the Duo Mood Swing plushie! Students enrolled in the challenge for Spanish 2-4 and 2026 grads are eligible to win the grand prize if they earn a minimum of 10,000 XP and the most XP at all four levels (Spanish 2, Spanish 3, Spanish 4, and 2026 grads).
