FRISCO ISD HOMEWORK POLICY
Homework assignments can be an extension of unfinished classroom work or a review of previously taught skills. Parents are not expected to instruct their children. They are expected to assist if the need arises. Students should understand what they are to do before they leave school for the day and be able to complete the assignment in a relatively short period of time. Drill-type activities are ones that should be completed quickly.
Elementary school students should spend no more than 10 minutes per grade level on homework, including nightly reading, (i.e. first grade 10 minutes, second grade 20 minutes, third grade 30 minutes, etc.). If homework routinely takes more time than this, students or parents are encouraged to talk to the teacher privately and explain the concerns students are experiencing with their homework. Teachers, students and parents should work together to ensure a reasonable homework load.
Parents should ensure that their child does the homework each day. Regular monitoring of homework provides a good overview of how and what the student is doing in various subjects. Homework provides a regular channel of communication between the parent and teacher.
Third Grade Math Homework
Third grade students are expected to work on fact fluency nightly: currently just Addition and Subtraction facts (Ex: 6 + 7, 9 + 4, 14 - 6, 17 - 9). Once we begin multiplication, those facts must be practiced daily as well. If your child's class is using the website Xtramath.org, the link can be found below. Xtra math works on fact fluency by introducing facts in isolation until mastery and then advances the student. The program will let the student know when it is time to log off for the day (it will not take more than 5-7 minutes to complete). Otherwise, parents can spend time in the car quizzing their child on their math facts. Only 5-7 minutes a day can really make a difference, and knowing math facts will help with computations of larger numbers.
Third Grade Reading Homework
Students are required to read for 20 minutes every evening. Reading skills will only improve with practice. It is imperative that students read every day, both at home and at school.
Third Grade Spelling Homework
Students will have a spelling test each Friday (8 weeks out of every 9 week period) beginning August 23, 2024. Students have word work time during the school day to work on spelling words. It is recommended that students spend a few minutes each evening working on their spelling words as part of their homework routine.
