Butterfly Festival Contest

Learning Goal: Students will create a fantasy or realistic butterfly for the Butterfly Festival contest.
Vocabulary:
Symmetrical Balance – A balanced arrangement in which the parts of a composition are organized so that one side duplicates or mirrors the other.
Asymmetrical Balance – A feeling of balance attained when the visual units on either side of a vertical axis are actually different but are placed in the composition the create a “felt” balance of the total artwork.
Fantasy - imagination, especially when extravagant and unrestrained.
Realistic - interested in, concerned with, or based on what is real or practical.
Materials:
You may choose any media, but since these will be laminated I suggest the following media….
Colored pencil Crayons
Markers Sharpie
Construction paper Drawing paper
Instructions:
No smaller than 3” x 5”
No larger than 8 ½” x 11”
Butterfly must be Symmetrical
Butterfly must have a Front & Back Design (they do not have to be the same)
Butterfly must be either Realistic or Fantasy
Grading criteria: 20 points each

Progress Grades (Daily Grade)
Butterfly Sketch (Minor Grade)
Butterfly Final Project (Major Grade)
Self Critique (Daily Grade)
Class Critique (Daily Grade)
