Ceramic Container

Ceramic Container Criteria:

ü Cylinder Container should be between 4-5 inches tall.

ü Lid must fit securely.

ü Design should be original, not trite (lacking in freshness or effectiveness because of constant use or excessive repetition) NO hearts, stars, happy faces, etc…

ü Design on lid & box should be unified through a repeated pattern & theme but show variety.

ü Design must use both additive & subtractive surface techniques.

ü Lid design must include a small 3-D sculpture on the top.

ü Name or initials and period must be carved into bottom of box.

ü Edges must be smooth & container must be smooth with no cracks or unwanted markings.

Instructions:

1. Wedge clay.
2. Level the clay by pressing into a flat, even thickness with the heel or palm of your hand.
3. Roll out clay in slab roller.
4. Using patterns cut out side, bottom, top, & bottom of lid.
5. Wrap tubing with newspaper.
6. Place clay for bottom of container under tubing.
7. Score the edges of the bottom that are exposed.
8. Wrap clay for side around tubing and slip & score the edges together.
9. Slip & score the side to the bottom of the container.
10. Slip & score the top of the container to the bottom of the lid.
11. Add surface decoration using additive & subtractive techniques. Remember to slip & score for additive! Wait until slabs are leather-hard for subtractive!
