Hi,
I teach in a Structured Learning Class with two of the greatest assistants in the world. Our class is an alternative setting, tailor made for students with developing communication, socialization, academic, behavioral, and / or functional skills. We make use of visual supports, evidence-based teaching strategies, a structured setting and schedule, and low student / staff ratio as we learn, grow, and make memories together. Much of the time you will see us out and about the school doing all the usual elementary school stuff everyone else does.
I am an Air Force veteran and parent of three amazing adult children. My wife and I live in Oak Point. I am starting my 30th year teaching students with special needs of all ages and ability levels. The majority of my educational experience has been in the areas of behavior and Autism. I earned my undergraduate teaching degree as well as my master’s degree in administration from Texas A&M - Commerce.
Finally, and most importantly, I love teaching and learning from my students and their families. It never gets old. Thank you for taking the time to learn about me.
Sincerely,
Eric Frichette

Hello!
My name is Karen Venhuizen. I am excited to start my 3rd year at Comstock working in the SLC classes. I graduated from Texas A&M University Kingville, with a Masters degree in Communication Disorders and prior to that from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, with a Masters degree in Psychology. Working with students who struggle with communication is my passion.
My husband and I have lived in McKinney for the past 9 years. Prior to that we lived in Austin for 20 years. I have throughout that time worked with children with communication difficulties. I have been married for 40 years and we have two grown children, one living close and the other in Alabama, each with families of their own. I have a passion for animals and cooking.
Speech and language development happens around the clock. Some ways to support your student in this development include: talk about the school day and what items are placed within their folders, have a flexible approach and offer choices making books, puzzles one of the choices, turn take with activities and support as your child needs, keep positive, and allow time for making choices. Maintaining a regulated body, feeling calm and safe allows your student to open up to his or her learning experience and interactions with others.
I can't wait to work with your amazing children this school year!
