Honors Pre-Algebra Course Information

We'll start with the easy "stuff"

Your teacher (me): Ms. Raymond

You will generally have one No Homework night per 6 day cycle.

The “no homework day” will vary according to our progress and/or considerations such as holidays or major (other subject) project due dates. Individual and reasonable requests will be considered if brought to my attention politely and in advance.

Tests and Quizzes will be announced well in advance. Topic coverage will be made clear with a handout, and we will have ample review time in class.

Please bring the following to class every day:

Paper, Pencil(s), & Eraser(s)

Spiral notebook in which to take class notes

Math folder or binder with designated math section

Calculator (a four-function calculator is sufficient, but a scientific calculator would also be fine)

During SOME units/on SOME Days

Bring your math textbook

I will do my best to let you know when this is needed and when it is not. I can tell you in advance that you will be better off with your book during our geometry work (I don’t draw well. . . . . . )

Important “Details”

Textbooks

It is your responsibility to take care of your book. One book is assigned to you, and your name is written in it in permanent marker. If the book is lost or significantly damaged, you (your parents) will be charged.

There are several spare textbooks on the shelves above the microwave for use in the instance that you have forgotten to bring your own book to class and you need one. Borrow one if you need to do so, but please return at the end of the period.

If you lose/misplace your book, please let me know so that I can give you a loaner until your book is found.

Classroom Resources

There is a bin of lined notebook paper and a cup of loaner writing implements in the corner of the classroom closest to Ms. R’s desk. Feel free to “borrow” as needed. However, if you make a habit of not bringing appropriate materials to class, expect to have a conversation with me, which may be followed by my communicating with your parents.

A hanging folder is provided in the room for each student to store completed homework, worksheets, review sheets, and tests. They are stored in the room in shared file boxes, but each folder is considered private property. No student should ever look at materials in another student's folder.

Information about Homework

Please complete all assignments in PENCIL on lined paper or on a worksheet (if provided).

Please make your work neat, organized, and legible. Using a pencil and an eraser will help. You should skip lines between problems.

Most homework assignments should take about 25 minutes. Some may take a bit less time, and others may take more. If you are stuck on one problem, make a note of it with a post-it or other small symbol. Then skip it and go on to other problems. Ask about that skipped problem in class the next day.

You should show your work (the process by which you obtained your answer) clearly.

You should “work down”, showing the original problem on the first line, the first step on the next line, the second step on the line below that and so on.

Please do not crowd your work.

Please label every assignment with your NAME, the DATE, and the ASSIGNMENT NUMBER.

You are strongly advised to label problems on your homework with the appropriate page numbers from the textbook so that you can find problems again for corrections.

I provide planners with clear information about our class plans, homework assignments, due dates, and reminders.

If changes are necessary, they will be announced in class and/or a new planner will be distributed. I will do my best to post any changes promptly on my webpage.

In the event that you lose your planner, check my webpage on the Foote School Website.

Grading of Homework

Assume that every assignment will be collected and graded (most will).

You can correct and resubmit every assignment for a higher grade.

You should NOT erase your original work, but re-do the appropriate parts of the problem separately where you have adequate space to do so neatly.

You may do corrections on a separate page, but the original assignment must always be attached in order for additional credit to be granted.

You may resubmit assignments up to THREE times if necessary. (This makes a maximum total of four submissions.) Please make a genuine effort to correct all errors on an assignment and to do so promptly.

Academic Honesty

It is expected that all work submitted will be your own.

You may ask for homework help from Ms. R., classmates, or other teachers. You may check homework answers with other students or work together on homework problems. You may NOT, under any circumstances, COPY another student's work either for an original assignment or for corrections.

At times, Take Home Extra Credit may be given. Expectations for this are different than the guidelines given above for homework. In these cases, a student may NOT ask for help or discuss problems with other students or teachers. An Honor Code for Take Home Extra Credit will be provided, in written form, with any such extra credit. Each student will be expected to sign indicating that they have followed the guidelines in good faith.

Information about Notes and Homework Sets

You need a separate spiral notebook for math notes ONLY. Please keep your math notes in this same notebook for the entire year/course. Please do NOT use paper from this notebook for homework or you will run out of paper for notes. (We will take notes regularly.)

Ms. R. will occasionally read through your notes and offer comments and suggestions. Her assessment will be part of your grade for the appropriate unit.

Every time there is a test you will be asked to hand in a Homework Set*. A Homework Set consists of all worksheets, review sheets, and numbered assignments (with all corrections) from that unit. Assignments should be placed in the appropriate order, and a cover sheet will be provided for you to indicate if any regrades are needed.

Your Homework Set will receive a “homework-type” numerical grade.

*Homework Set information will be reviewed carefully when it is time for you to submit your first homework set. Meanwhile, just remember to label and number your assignments, do your corrections, and keep your homeworks neatly when they are returned.

Information about Grades

Your Homework Set will receive a “homework-type” numerical grade. This grade will be averaged with all other homework grades for the unit.

A unit grade is a combination of the unit’s homework average and the unit’s quiz/test grade.

Quizzes, tests, and homework sets (after they have been graded) will be returned to you. Sometimes, you will be asked to get your quiz/test or graded homework set parentally signed so that your parents are kept adequately informed of your progress.
