Unit 1 - Introduction to Chem
Unit 1 Class Activity Information, Labs, and Demo Videos
These should be used when you need a link during class for an activity or there are also files specific for when you are absent on the day of a demo or a lab to use to catch up. If you were present in class but you want/need to see the lab or demo again you can also use the absent student links.
Lesson 1A
Cork Pop Demo Video (for absent students or if you want to see it again/see in slow motion at the end of the video)
Lesson 1B
Burning Candle Lab Video (for absent students)
Lab Analysis Discussion Google Slide Deck (for absent students)
Lesson 2A:
Alka-seltzer and Vinegar Demo Video (for absent students)
Boiling Alcohol Demo Video (for absent students - I would suggest you watch this one on x1.75 speed)
Lesson 2B:
Lesson 3:
Google Slide Deck of Teacher Demo for Reading Lab Equipment (for absent students)
Introduction to Lab Equipment & Measurement Lab Video (for absent students)
Lesson 4:
Teacher Demo for Density of Liquids & Cylinder (for absent students)
Data for a set of the Black Blocks (for absent student use ONLY)
Video of a Black Block and a Cylinder (for absent students - this is the video that is linked for you to use for all the missing data on the data set)
Lesson 5A:
Absent students complete the part with your hand and water at home, see me when you return to do the part with the rubbing alcohol.
Salting-Out Density Demo (for absent students)
Density Warm-up #2 (for absent students - this warm-up has a link to the Pop Can Demo at the top of the file and then the calculations are completed that go with the demo in the warm-up itself)
Lesson 5B:
Demo Video - Boiling Water and Rubbing Alcohol (used in class and for absent students)
Lesson 6:
No additional resources needed
Lesson 7A:
Teacher Demo Calorimeter Video (for absent students to draw and take notes (SOUND ON) about the calorimeter on #4 on Lesson 7A)
Teacher Calorimeter Diagram (used in class and for absent students)
Energy Equation (q=mcT) Example Problems (before 7A Data Analysis section) (used in class and for absent students)
Google Slide Deck: Rearranging q = mcT for other variables (used in class and for absent students)
Vodcast for #4A in the analysis section of Lesson 7A (for absent students and anyone who needs to see it again after we go over it in class)
Lesson 7B:
No additional resources needed
Lesson 7C:
Specific Heat of a Metal Lab (for absent students - this is similar to the lab we did in class, you can use the data in it for absent student data if needed)
Unit 1 SUB Lesson Day (Penny Density):
Penny Density Video (for absent students)
Sample Class Data Set for the Penny Density (question #7) - EVERYONE needs this Class Data to complete #7 on this lesson
Unit 1 Resource Materials
These are videos and other resources we used in the lessons. They are in the calendar on the day we used them as well.
Percent Error Example Calculation (during Lesson 4A) - we went over this in class but the work and answers are also on the second page of the document.
Communicating Measurements Slide Deck (during Lesson 4A) - Add anything you feel is notebook worthy to your Chemistry Notebook from this. It is mostly for reference and for trying to have everyone report digits to around the same place value in this class.
Bozeman Science - Density Video (6 mins) (after Lesson 4A) - This says it is for AP Physics but it is a great short introduction for us. Add anything from it that you think is notebook worthy to your Chemistry Notebook.
Chemistry Concept Builder: Density Ranking (after Lesson 4A) - This is great practice with the concept of density and gives you instant feedback. Just do the "Guest" login for your name, you do not need to create an account. We go over in class how to use this website with the concept builders, if you are absent that day and need help navigating the site see me and I can show you how!
Chemistry Concept Builder: Which One Doesn't Belong Energy and Reactions (after Lesson 6B) - APPRENTICE Level ONLY
Chemistry Concept Builder: Measuring Quantity of Heat (after Lesson 6B) - APPRENTICE Level ONLY
Chemistry Concept Builder: Measurement and Numbers (technically after Lesson 3 but I list it at the end here because I think it's best for reviewing measurements again before the unit assessment) - MEASUREMENT Level ONLY
