Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Efforts to resolve XY Plotter software
Working on various aspects of the Proof-Of-Concept Presentation
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Completed meeting with instructor
Attended meeting with sponsor and made logistical changes
Completed writing assignment relating to project's Impact on Society
Placed order for lift mechanism
Build and tested first 2D Phantom prototype
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Resolve issues with XY Plotter software; consider switching to MAE156A Arduino (Daniel, Wisdom)
Receive and start work on lift mechanism (Sean)
Prepare for meetings with instructor and sponsor following Proof-Of-Concept Presentation (Team)
Complete Attenuating Screen Case construction (Jakub, Sean)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
18APR2017 (In-person Meeting):
Provided feedback on previous week's presentation. Seemed satisfied with presented information
Sought and was given details about Team's efforts to resolve both the XY- and Z-motion
Clarified that earlier budget adjustments would not affect project budget as there is more room available through the performed budget consolidation
Team alleviated any possible sponsor worries in ensuring that cut-out of Phantom would match desired size
Sponsor shared that he was leaning more toward a Random Pattern Screen made out of mixed particles instead of drawn or cut out patterns. Indicated that sand could constitute one of these materials, in fact. Further, the materials should that one is the source of significant attenuation while the other leads to limited radioactive attenuation. If both could be made, would make for different options to consider
Revised meeting logistics: while bi-weekly Hangouts will remain, sponsor is willing to meet Team on campus on the other weeks instead of having team members meet his in Hillcrest as was the norm until now
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
18APR2017:
When discussing motorized system for lift mechanism, Instructor suggested that consideration be given to Gear Worm Drive and Gear Transmission. Indicated that this endeavor
Indicated that software requirements might end up overwhelming Team if not immediately addressed. In Team's efforts to heed his advice, some truth was found in his words: the software supposed to run the XY Plotter is proving more complicated than anticipated. Also, Instructor brought up the software requirements relating to overcoming hysteresis on the lift mechanism
Team alleviated Instructor worries about the need for a drain valve on the Phantom: given how infrequently it will be drained/refilled, drain valves simply are not needed
Team must know why decisions are being made and how all components fit together especially in light of the upcoming presentation 2 weeks away
Described certain aspects he wished for in future presentations: System block diagrams, Better transitions, Better use of time (during last presentation, Team still had plenty of time left that could have been used to explain further)
When asked by a team member about adhesive for acrylic, Instructor suggested using those in the UCSD lab; he also indicated the possible need for etches on the surfaces to be glued together in order to facilitate adhesion
Finally, reminded Team to involve Roxanne in purchasing needs
Risks and Areas of Concern
Setup for XY Plotter: some erratic movement; currently working to resolve issue
Fragility of XY Plotter baseboard: broke off a piece from the first board during initial use; with the pronounced difficulty of re-soldering piece, Team opted to purchase another such board
