156B Week 1
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Tuesday 4/2/13; met with sponsor and device end-user.
In process of verifying theoretical to actual stretch (will help determine dimensions needed to get the desired percent stretch)
In process of building a prototype motorized stretcher
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Matlab model made to approximate the maximum percent stretch of the "manual-push" device
Acquired microscope images of stretched dust particles for verifying theoretical model
Increased knowledge of functional requirements obtained from meeting with end user
Individual component analysis (IN PROGRESS)
Tentatively decided on the design approach - motorized version of current prototype
Acquired stepper motors from component room in EBUII
Acquired Silicon sheet with which petri dishes will be made
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Validation of Matlab model with empirical testing to determine relationship between vertical push and axial stretch - Jordan - DONE
Assembly of simple linear automated stretcher (not necessarily to dimensions) - Team
Get quote on 4 Squiggle motors - Tony
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
In person:
Sponsor emphasized device requirement to be low profile to fit within microscope dimensions. (4/2)
Proposed worm-gear actuators mounted horizontally might be solution if
Sponsor and end-user strongly emphasized the quantitative functional requirement of the device. (4/2)
Scientist/end-user informed us that membrane should not change vertical position during stretching process, as it goes out of focus on the microscope. (4/2)
Device will need to be pre-stretched at 1% or clamped vertically so no vertical position change occurs.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
ND requested a physical stretch test within 1st 2 weeks of spring quarter (3/14)
Team has planned to purchase 2 basic linear actuators to begin assembly of a simple stretching mechanism
Need to acquire silicone membrane from client organization to begin this testing/device. - DONE
ND asked for a list of possible issues with existing prototype and our design(s). (3/14)
Existing prototype:
Stretch amount is not reproducible
Stretch amount is non-quantifiable
Cell does not stay within field of view during stretch
Motorized design:
Current design has vertically oriented motors, horizontal may be required for space considerations
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
From presentation:
Look into squiggle motors
Use injection molding to make device
Risks and Areas of Concern
Capability of supplied computer
Capability of supplied camera (image feedback may not be possible if camera can't supply enough images to be used as feedback for control algorithm)
If image feedback not possible will using a blind method for controlling curves provide enough accuracy
Has the device being used ever produced usable illuminesence?
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Information on camera model/capabilities PENDING
