Whether our work is art or science or the daily work of society, it is only the form in which we explore our experience [that] is different; the need to explore remains the same. This is why, at bottom, the society of scientists is more important than their discoveries. What science has to teach us here is not its techniques but its spirit: the irresistible need to explore. For this is the lesson of science, that the concept is more profound than its laws, and the act of judging more critical than the judgment.
- Science and Human Values, J. Bronowski, 1965.
The best of science doesn't consist of mathematical models and experiments. Those come later. It springs fresh from a more primitive mode of thought. The mind weaves ideas from old facts, fresh metaphors and the scrambled images of things recently seen. To move forward is to concoct new patterns of thought which in turn, dictate the design of models and experiments.
- The Diversity of Life, O.E. Wilson, 1999.
Deep beneath the surface of reality, something lay hidden. The job of the scientist is to coax it out. - Albert Einstein
Note to Students: In our classroom, emphasis is placed on reading accredited science sources that are appropriate for the high school student as well as responding to questions based on those readings. Often the sources are not easy to understand, so we rely on the collective process of sharing our insights. Interactions with fellow students - through discussions, arguments, and collaborations - on exercises and lab activities are strongly encouraged to emphasize the fact that learning is a social process as much as it is an individual pursuit. You will learn from others' perspectives, but you cannot learn if you are not present. - Mr. Lenox
Letter of Recommendation: Any student who is applying to a college physics or engineering program should request a letter of recommendation from a science teacher. I will consider writing a letter for a student who has demonstrated the necessary effort to comprehend the course material and be successful in course assessments and has demonstrated a willingness to participate, collaborate, and uphold academic integrity in the classroom and the school community. If you would like to request a letter of recommendation, please do so in person. You will be asked to prepare a response to specific questions. Preference will be given to students enrolled in AP Physics and students applying to science and engineering programs. Before writing the letter, I will schedule a time to discuss your responses with you. Letter of Recommendation
Note to Parents/Guardians: Much like when you were a student, physics is a challenging course. It requires a blend of physical science concepts with algebra skills. The concepts are old, but the methods (i.e. computer models, platforms, etc.) are new. Like anything, it demands practice, reflection and revision; new concepts building on fundamentals. This is what we do in our class - learn a new concept, reinforce it with fundamentals, and practice the skills. Like any sport, it is more challenging to play a game than practice; but only through guided practice will we achieve the outcome we desire.
If your child is struggling, encourage them to seek help through their teacher or our Peer Tutor Program. School work is hard; this is a lesson in itself. Help them persevere. - F. Lenox
