In PSC we begin each day with a Morning Meeting. During Morning Meeting we build community, practice key social and communication skills, and have fun together. For more information about Morning Meeting, see the links below.
In our classroom we use the reading and writing curriculum from the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. As a part of this curriculum, we will be focusing on three different genres of writing; Narrative, Informational, and Opinion. We will learn and apply skills to read and understand both fiction and nonfiction texts and continue to practice phonics/word study.
We are using a math curriculum called Bridges in Mathematics. For more information about this curriculum and how to support your child's learning at home check out the links below!

Social studies this year will focus on our local communities and neighborhoods. We will also be incorporating the social justice standards into our social studies learning.
This year we will be learning about nutrition and staying safe.
Art this year will integrate with our science and social studies themes by learning about light and balance in art.
We use Amplify Science for our science instruction. Here is an introductory letter for the curriculum.
This year we are learning about physical science. Students will learn about light and sound, properties of materials, and balancing forces.
We will also integrate the content of science into our literacy activities, morning meeting, social studies, art, and math. Doing this makes the learning more authentic.
Finally, we will be introducing science concepts through lens of social justice and focus on the issues of climate change and how we can make our world a better place.
In addition to our specific curriculum areas, we teach with a focus on character development and equity. Character traits and social/emotional skills including respect, responsibility, perseverance, empathy, and kindness are empathized throughout the year and across all areas of our day. We will specifically address inequalities and prejudice based on race, gender, identity, ability and other biases. As a community we embrace this learning both bravely and in a way that is developmentally appropriate. Topics of character education and equity learning are taught explicitly during times like morning meeting, class meeting, read aloud time, social studies, health, etc. Truly, however, this learning is embedded in all we do. Opportunities for reinforcement and practice are in all academic areas and social times. Perseverance, for example, is essential to call out and practice during science, math, or any challenging task. Reading a historical biography requires discussion and awareness of bias and representation. Students are coached to practice empathy to approach a social situation in the lunchroom, for example. We keep this learning at the heart of all we do with the aim of nurturing individual success and cultivating a community where all can thrive.
