Our Homework Philosophy:

The goal of homework is to practice concepts and skills learned in the classroom and to build good work habits.  In addition to academics, it is just as important for your child's future success that they learn to manage their time, act responsibly, and persevere when challenged.
We also believe it is an opportunity for parents and guardians to gain insight into your child's progress and be involved in their learning.  Your child should not be doing anything they have not already learned and homework time should not have to be a stressful experience.  We have designed our homework to give students enough things to practice throughout the week.  Please contact the teachers if your child is having a hard time completing the work and we can talk about how to help them be successful.
We understand that life happens and that other aspects of life are very important as well.  If your child can not turn in homework on the day it is due, just keep it at home and they can turn in two weeks worth the following Monday.  There are no late work consequences in our classroom.
We value the act of completing the homework to the best of the child's ability.  If there are a few errors this is perfectly appropriate (it means they are working at their correct learning level).  For example, it is normal for first graders to be inventive/phonetic in their spelling.  We want homework to generate discussions between you and your child about what they are learning.  This might mean that you take mistakes as positive learning moments.  It is important to remember though that as they learn mistakes will happen and we do not expect perfection, only best effort.  We do not expect you to correct your child's homework before they turn it in.  We already have a really good picture of your child's progress, but if you are concerned about patterns of misunderstanding feel free to contact the teachers.
We consider reading practice to be, hands down, the most important thing your child can doMultiple studies have shown the powerful impact reading practice has on learning.  Whether it is with you or by themselves, make sure your child practices their reading each week.
