Adaptive Physical Education

Adapted Physical Education

Our goal for the Adapted Program at JPS is to integrate general education students to role model healthy living skills which can span from physical, mental and social wellness. It provides every individual student the opportunity to be active and have fun! As well as promoting fitness for every student, we encourage sportsmanship, communication, teamwork and social skills throughout the curriculum.

PROJECT PIECES

Providing Instruction and Experience in Community and Everyday Settings

Project Pieces serves students with multiple-disabilities ages 14-21 who require specialized instruction in functional life skills for independence. The program follows a functional academic curriculum aligned with Core Curriculum Content Standards. Instruction is provided through classroom teaching, community-based experiences, and vocational training.

Students participate in community-based instruction in order to practice real-life skills in natural environments. Community-based instruction includes activities like: ordering at restaurants, paying for items at the store, selecting and buying clothing and groceries, leisure skills in the community, and using community agencies. Project Pieces fundraises for these learning experiences by designing and creating custom apparel for local schools, businesses, and community locations.

Project Pieces provides students with the opportunities to develop independent work skills through school based vocational training and work based learning within local businesses. Within the school, students work at HawkMart School Store, inventory and deliver teacher supplies, run a photo copy business, do mailings and office work, and practice job skills in our simulated grocery store, card shop, and retail clothing store. Through real-life experience, students develop transferable skills for acquiring and maintaining employment.
