In 2014, GED Testing Service will unveil a new assessment that ensures the GED testing program is no longer an endpoint for adults, but rather a springboard for further education, training, and better paying jobs. Four content-area assessments—Literacy, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies—will measure a foundational core of knowledge and skills, and an additional performance level will certify that adults are ready for college and careers and much more.

According to the State Department of Education the primary aim of the General Education Development (GED) Testing Program in Connecticut is to provide a second opportunity for individuals to obtain their high school diplomas. The GED Test documents the foundation skills (problem-solving, communication, and computation) necessary for GED graduates to advance in postsecondary education and learn job- specific skills. The GED tests reflect the major and lasting academic outcomes of a four-year program of study with an increased emphasis on workplace and higher education skills reflected in the context of the test items.
Eligibility Requirements
To enroll in the East Haven Adult Learning Center GED Program, the individual: Must not be enrolled in high school
Must not have graduated high school
Must be seventeen years of age or older
Must meet state, provincial, or territorial requirements regarding age, residency, and the length of time since leaving school
Must pass an official GED practice test to be eligible to take the official GED test.

At the time of test registration, individuals seventeen and eighteen years old must submit documentation from the last high school attended that they have either been officially withdrawn from school for at least six months (seventeen year-olds must have a withdrawal form with a parent or guardian signature) or the class with which they entered ninth grade (or would have entered if never enrolled in high school) has already graduated.

How does the new 2014 test differ from the old 2002 test?
The new test measurement will move the curriculum methodology from Bloom's Taxonomy to Webb's Depth of Knowledge model. This new curriculum model is a framework that analyzes a wide range of cognitive demands and complexity now found in our academic standards and curricula. It is based on the principles of:
Recall
Basic application
Strategic thinking
Extended thinking
and aligned to the Common Core Standards to which the CSDE prescribes
The GED Test has been updated to make sure that it measures the knowledge a high school senior should know and what an employer or college admissions Director will expect from you.
There are four (4) parts
Science (90 minutes)
Social Studies (75 minutes)
Reasoning Through Language Arts (155 minutes including a 10-minute break)
Mathematical Reasoning (120 minutes)
The tests are offered on the computer (paper tests are available for accommodations only. Check with your local provider for the necessary forms)
Applicants can register for either the English or Spanish tests
How do I get started
Starting today, students can access the new 2014 GED® program tools through MyGED™ at GED.com, an online portal that serves as the central hub for all 2014 student resources. Students may sign up for free, find preparation tools, schedule their GED® test, check their score, receive personalized study recommendation to improve their scores, and get support for college and career transitions. Also in MyGED™, students can take GED Ready™: The Official Practice Test, which will tell them if they're ready to pass the real thing.
The 2014 GED® program is the only start-to-finish program that will revolutionize the way adults earn their high school equivalency credentials and improve their lives.
Application Procedures
A web based registration must be completed, before any application to take a test can be started. Test Takers have THREE steps to register for the GED Test on Computer®. Please read the steps provided and then use the URL below to begin the process.
Step 1: Create an account. Test takers will receive an account activation email with a link to the step 2.
Step 2: To register, Click on the link and answer all questions completely. After this submission, the test taker will get another e-mail requiring them to supply supporting documentation and then go to their nearest Adult Education Center, specifically – any GED Test registration site listed through the State of Connecticut and MyGED list as registration centers. At the center, the applicant will be counseled as to the various opportunities they can access in obtaining a high school diploma. The candidate must complete this step before they can register for the test. The center will then release the candidate by inputting a release to the EXCEPTION QUEUE. Without completion of this step, the student cannot register for the GED test!
Step 3: Schedule a test: In order for the Computer Based Programs to approve test takers to schedule their test, specific information must be documented.
NOTE: ALL test takers must have valid photo identification. You must indicate on the GED Test on Computer® Form that it is an appropriate ID. All individuals registering to take the GED test are required to show a current, valid government photo ID (e.g., driver’s license, passport) to the registrar as proof of identity when completing step two. Joe Ferraiolo, GED registrar at the East Haven Adult Learning Center will need to verify this at that time. Under no circumstances will this be waived. No expired IDs will be accepted.
GED Fees
An applicant twenty-one years of age or older and a non-veteran must pay an initial fee of $13.00 to take the test. The fee to retake or reapply for the test is also $13.00. These fees include the cost of the diploma. Only veterans and applicants under the age of twenty-one are exempt from fees. All fees are non-refundable and must be paid at the time of registration. Fees should be paid in the form of a money order or certified check made out to the appropriate local or regional board of education.
Important notices -
Applicants must pass the GED Ready Practice test to be eligible to take the actual GED subject test.
There is a 60 day wait period between failed sub-sections. An applicant must take all sub sections prior to retesting any failed sub section.
Students will have a 24 hour cancellation window in which to cancel a specific test or tests.
Any student in need of accommodations must have all documentation submitted to Pearson Vue prior to the scheduled tests. Forms may be obtained from your registration center at the time of Counseling.
The total minimum passing score is 580. You must receive a minimum score of 145 in each subsection test.
Textbook Policy:
We suggest that students purchase a GED textbook to aid in their educational experience, but East Haven Adult Education is in compliance with Connecticut General Statutes Sec.10-73a and does not charge fees for registration, textbooks or materials used in mandated programs.
What to expect from the 2014 Computer Based Series GED Test
The new GED Science Test will feature following types of questions:
• Multiple choice items
• Brief short answer items
• A variety of technology-enhanced items
• Cloze items
Each item type provides opportunities for test-takers to apply different cognitive strategies to demonstrate proficiency with Science practices and content knowledge. Each item type on the Science Test may be presented either as a discrete item or as part of an item scenario in which two or three items pertain to a single stimulus. Stimulus materials may include brief text, graphs, tables, or other graphic representations of data or scientific concepts. Many of the Science Test stimuli will pertain to the focusing themes of “Health and the Human Body” and “Energy” as identified.
The new GED Social Studies Test will feature the following types of questions:
• Multiple choice items
• A variety of technology-enhanced items
• Cloze items
Each item type on the Social Studies Test may be presented either as a discrete item or as part of an item scenario in which two or three items pertain to a single stimulus. Stimulus materials may include brief text, maps, graphs, tables, or other graphic representations of data or scientific concepts. Many of the brief texts featured in both discrete items and item scenarios will be drawn from texts reflecting “the Great American Conversation? These texts may be directly excerpted from founding documents, such as The Bill of Rights, or they may contain analyses of these documents. They may also be drawn from other more contemporary primary and secondary source documents (e.g. political speeches and commentary) that convey important concepts about American civics.
The new GED Language Arts and Writing Test on the new assessment will be composed of several passage sets. Each passage will include text ranging from 400-900 words and six to eight items. The Literacy Test will feature the following types of assessments:
• Multiple choice items
• Brief short answer items
• Several different types of technology-enhanced items
• Cloze items embedded in passages
• One 45-minute extended response item
Test-takers can apply different cognitive strategies with the wide variety of item types, demonstrating proficiency with the literacy content.
The new GED Mathematics Test will feature the following:
• Multiple choice items
• A variety of technology-enhanced item types
• Cloze items
Each item type on the Mathematics test may be presented either as a discrete item or as part of single stimulus. Stimulus materials may include brief text, graphs, tables, or other graphic representations of numeric, geometric, statistical, or algebraic concepts. Stimulus materials may include brief text, maps, graphs, tables, or other graphic representations of data or scientific concepts. Many of the brief texts featured in both discrete items and items scenarios will be drawn from texts reflecting.
