ESL Programs

English as a Second Language Programs

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program supports the linguistic and academic development of English Learners (ELs) in our district.

Those who qualify for this program come from more than 25 different language backgrounds. New students in grades PK-adult, enter our schools throughout the academic year.

Mission:

The East Haven Public School District sees the uniqueness of each student and values the diversity found within our community.  We believe that every learner deserves a meaningful social and academic experience that motivates active participation, community involvement, and risk taking.

The Mission of our program is to prepare students to acquire academic language proficiency skills and promote student achievement.

Our program strives to:

• Provide instruction that is academically challenging, integrated with our district's content curriculum, yet tailored to each EL’s linguistic proficiency, educational background and academic needs

• Encourage cultural and social adjustment in a safe environment, while building ELs’ confidence as they practice language skills and global customs

• Advocate for the needs of our ELs and their families, and offer positive examples of how they can advocate for themselves

• Grow as part of a professional learning community by offering our time and our materials as resources to benefit student and district goals

Our Vision:

The East Haven ESL Program will facilitate our students' opportunities to make a positive contribution to our schools and society, and successfully compete in the global mainstream.
