COLLEGE

October is College Knowledge Month!

Most Minnesota Colleges and Universities offer FREE APPLICATIONS during  the month of October!

See list below!

It's never too early to plan for college!!  With the Ramp-Up to Readiness program at DBHS, students will start the college exploration process in 7th grade.  Students will learn about 2-year community and technical colleges, 4-year colleges and universities, and the different types of programs they offer.  Students need to take this even more seriously as they enter their junior year.  It is wise to be looking at all options to determine which career path is most appropriate.  Post-secondary institution's admission requirements (including test results, high school GPA, and application deadlines) vary.  Therefore, it is important to gather your information as early as possible.  The summer between 11th and 12th grade is a good time to explore options and visit post-secondary institutions.  You can arrange an appointment at any college by contacting their admissions office.

Students are highly encouraged to visit the campuses of colleges they are considering!  All Juniors and Seniors are allowed 2 days per school year to attend college visits, which will count as an excused absence.  Visiting the college campus can have the greatest impact on your decision regarding what college to attend--you need to step on campus in order to find out if that college feels right for you!

I will meet with all seniors in September to discuss college and to plan out their senior year.  However, students are welcome to stop in the counseling office at any time if they need help with the college application process.

Most students apply to colleges online.  However, there are some paper applications available in the counseling office.  The MN State Colleges & Universities Common Application (see below) can be used to apply to any of the 31 MN state colleges and universities and community and technical colleges listed on the application.  Click on the link below to fill out the common app online, or you can print a PDF version.  Once you have applied to a college, let me know so I can send your official transcripts and ACT scores to the college.  The Common Application (see below) is another option that allows students to apply to more than one college at a time, including the University of Minnesota and some private colleges in MN.

Many college representatives will be visiting our high school throughout the year (see schedule below--this will be updated frequently as more visits are scheduled).  Students who want to meet with the college reps need to get a pass from me.

The Build Dakota Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program in which students entering high-need workforce programs at four South Dakota technical institutes may receive a full-tuition scholarship!  That is a FREE education!  The 4 participating institutions include:  Lake Area Technical Institute, Mitchell Technical Institute, Southeast Technical Institute, and Western Dakota Technical Institute.  Students must first apply and be accepted into one the eligible programs at one of the 4 technical institutes, and then apply for the scholarship program between January 1, 2024 and March 15, 2024.  Students must show financial need through the completion of the FAFSA, but individuals at all income levels are encouraged to apply.  Following graduation, students must work full-time in South Dakota in the field of study for a minimum of 3 years.  See the link below for more information, or talk with Mrs. Mortenson.
