What is it?
There is a list of about 30 major concepts we will cover through the course of this class (posted under the Course Standards tab). These are the ideas that this class stands on. I'm explicitly telling you what ideas I expect you to understand. Each idea is graded based on a rubric you can find in the syllabus (under the Syllabus tab). The idea is that you understand the concepts before the end of the class, even if it takes you a little longer to get it.
How is this different than traditional grading systems?
This is different in several ways. Your grade will be fluctuating for most of this semester. This is because I will go into the gradebook and update it to reflect your most current level of understanding (as shown to me on quizzes and projects). Since each idea is listed individually, you are easily able to see where you are struggling in terms of concepts and can focus your attention and effort on those ideas. I also allow for reassessments (this does NOT mean re-takes or quiz corrections). A reassessment is an opportunity for you to come in and prove that you understand an idea even after the class has moved beyond that particular concept.
How do I reassess?
You need to fill out a reassessment application (found either in the Reassessment Form tab or in my room). You need to do at least one of the things listed. Then turn in the application with all your work. I will check it over and, if it looks like you understand what you are doing, you will have a chance to come in and prove that you get that concept. I will then change your grade to reflect your most current level of understanding.
Make sure you know the rules for reassessments before you apply.
How is my grade calculated?
Each concept is put into the gradebook individually. Each assessment (which could be anything from a discussion to a quiz) will change your grade in that particular concept. Your grade is calculated based on your two highest grades from each topic. From there, it is a straight percentage to convert to a letter grade. 85% of your grade comes from the quizzes done about once every week or two and 15% of your grade comes from the final.
How do I get a better grade?
Honestly, the best answer I can give is "learn the material covered in class". That mostly means that you pay attention, ask questions, and try to do the activities we work on in class. If you are having trouble, you need to come talk to me before or after school or during Seminar. If the idea is no longer on a quiz, you will have to fill out a reassessment application (outlined earlier) and do whatever work you need to do and then come in to prove you understand that concept.
