Administration of Medications

The California Education Code states that any student who is required to take medication prescribed by a physician during the regular school day, may be assisted by the school nurse or other designated school personnel if the district receives: (1.) a written statement from the physician detailing the method, amount and time schedules that the medication is to be taken and (2.) a written statement from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing the school district to administer the medication. (E.C. 49422, 49423).

Parent Responsibilities

1. Parent/Guardian will provide medication authorization/consent form at the beginning of each school year.

2. An adult must bring the medication to the school health office and pick up any outdated or unused medication throughout the school year.

3. Prescription medication must be in a container labeled by the pharmacist or health care provider and not be expired.

4. Non-prescription medication must be in the original container with the label intact and not be expired.

5. Pill splitting must be done by parent/guardian prior to providing medication to school officials.

6. Parent/Guardian will provide all materials or necessary equipment (e.g. measuring spoon) for medication administration.

7. Parent/Guardian will notify the school and provide a new written consent for any changes to the above authorization.

8. Any modifications or changes to the above authorizations may only be made after written notification is received from the health care provider.

9. End of school year medication needs to be picked up by parent/ guardian on or before the last day of school. Students are not allowed to transport medication home. Any medication remaining after the last student day will be properly disposed of.

Permission to Carry & Self Administer Medications

Students may carry and self-administer prescription auto-injectable epinephrine and asthma inhalers if certain requirements are met. No other prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbs, or alternative medications may be carried by students on their person, in a backpack or other container except as indicated above.

In order for your child to carry a self-administered emergency medication on his/her person, the following must be understood and agreed upon by the student and parents:

1. The student may utilize the prescribed self-administered medication as needed and directed by his/her physician. The Doctor’s signature indicates the student has been instructed on the proper use of the prescribed medication.

2. The medication must be properly labeled with the student's name.

3. Both the Authorization for Prescribed Medication form and Protocol must be signed by the parent/guardian and placed on file at the school prior to your child carrying a self-administered medication on his/her person.

Home Medications

The parent/guardian of a student on a continuing medication regimen at home is required to inform the school nurse or other designated certificated school employee of the medication being taken, the current dosage and the name of the supervising physician.

Notification is required to your child’s school when new medications are started at any time during the school year.
