WEIGHT ROOM CLASS POLICIES

2021-2022

Physical Education is a required course at Highlands Ranch High School, and weight training classes may be taken to fulfill the school’s requirement. We will focus on health-related fitness development in the areas of flexibility, strength training, speed, agility, quickness, power, and cardiovascular endurance, with Sport Training, Strength & Conditioning, and Power Weights each focusing on specific aspects of the above areas.

As in any of your other classes, your work and attitude will be reflected in your grade.

Grading will be based on Participation 70%, Quizzes/Worksheets 10%, Physical Testing 10% and a Final Written Test 10%.

The following factors will determine your grade:

GRADING SCALE

90% - 100% A

80% - 89% B

70% - 79% C

60% - 69% D

59% - Below F

PHYSICAL TESTING

The physical tests are projected max of 3 reps on several key exercises. Also included are a baseline and end of semester measurement of step test, sit & reach, and vertical jump.

DAILY ACTIVITY POINTS

70% of your grade will be based on your workout recordings in your Weight Lifting Journal. Recordings must be accurate, honest, and complete to receive full credit. A daily activity grade of 10 points will be given if you actively participate the entire class period..

The following choices you make will also affect your grade in this class:

1. Dress Code – You are required to wear athletic clothing on days you have class. Examples of acceptable clothing include athletic shoes, shorts, a t-shirt, and/or sweatsuit. Students not dressed out will receive a 5 point deduction and must work out to earn the remaining 5 points. Students wearing non-athletic shoes will not be allowed to participate, will lose all of their daily activity points, and will be required to complete a written worksheet. Hats are not allowed indoors.

2. Excused Absences– Attendance will be taken every day. Excused absences will receive a 10 point deduction until they are made up. You have two weeks to make up excused absences and excused non-dress days. Note: You cannot do make-ups in advance of absences. All make-ups are done AFTER absence status is established.

3. Unexcused Absence – Results in a 10 point deduction. See the instructor for make-up instructions. You have one week to make up unexcused absences.

4. Tardies - Attendance will be taken daily at the beginning of the class period.

You are expected to be in the weight room no later than 6 minutes after the tardy bell rings, wearing appropriate workout attire and ready to lift. Tardiness to class will result in a 3 point deduction. Points lost from tardies cannot be made up.

5. Poor Behavior – Horseplay, name-calling, profanity, inappropriate gesturing, misuse of equipment, failure to follow safety protocols, etc. will not be tolerated. Inappropriate behavior may result in a loss of points for the day. Fighting will result in an automatic trip to the office.

6. Gameday Participation – All athletes are required to dress out on their game day. Varsity athletes will complete the workout at 50% weight. All other athletes (J.V., Soph., Freshmen) will perform the required daily activity.

LOCKERS

A locker and lock are provided free of charge. However, a lock fee of $5.00 will be collected for locks lost or not returned at the end of the semester. Please remember to lock all valuables in your locker during class.

CELL PHONES

No cell phones, headphones, or earbuds are allowed to be used during class time. Please secure them away in backpacks during class. Backpacks may be stored in the locker room or in the back office in the weight room.

FOOD

No food or drinks, except water, is allowed in the weight room or gym.

BATHROOM BREAKS

Students must get permission from the teacher and sign out on the bathroom list before they can leave the weight room. They can only use the two bathrooms located directly outside of the weight room. Students who leave without permission will be marked absent and receive a zero for the day.

INJURY OR ILLNESS

If an injury occurs in class, report it immediately to your teacher. If you become ill or injured so that you are unable to participate in the class, you must bring a note from your doctor or parent excusing you from the activity. Without this note, the non-participation will be considered unexcused. You are still required to work out the non-injured muscle groups. If the situation arises that you receive an extended excuse from a physician and you cannot fulfill the requirements of the class, your schedule may have to be changed.

ABSENCE MAKE–UP OPTION

Students who are excused from class for any reason may make up their absence within two weeks by completing a lifting or body-weight work-out on their own at the Rec Center, Chuze, VASA, 24-Hour Fitness, Lifetime, etc., or at home (with the proper equipment). Students must print out the Make-Up Workout Sheet, complete it, have it signed by a parent, and turn it in within two weeks after the absence.

WRITTEN WORK/TESTS

Quizzes are based on materials contained in the weight lifting journals.

FINAL TESTS

There will be a written final composed of the information contained in the Weightlifting Journal and in the quizzes. There will also be a Max Final which judges your physical progress throughout the semester.

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY: Cheating on written work and tests will not be tolerated and will result in a grade of 0 on the assignment or test. A student who cheats will also be subject to disciplinary action per school policy. Cell phones are not allowed to be visible while a student is in possession of a written test. This includes online quizzes and assessments.
