First Grade Learning Targets to begin the School Year

  • I can learn about and understand the tools of the music room.

    1. I can define the word Rhythm as "the way the words go"

    2. I can demonstrate the difference between Beat and Rhythm using a given song

To the right are some of the tools that we use in the music room. First graders are learning to count and isolate the syllables of each word and create musical rhythm sentences or phrases by speaking them in order.

As a challenge they are using different types of body percussion along the way (clapping, stomping, snapping, and patting). It is fun to watch them combine the two ideas and voila! Suddenly it starts to sound like music.

Later they will learn to associate the rhythm of each tool with traditional music notation.
