COURSE Description:

This is a basic introductory course in photography designed to offer experiences with a camera and Adobe Photoshop. The elements and principles of design as they relate to photographic composition are emphasized throughout the course. This course builds the foundation for visual literacy regarding both form and content. Students also learn to examine images critically through a variety of digital projects and weekly personal reflections. Successful completion provides a foundation for further study in advanced photography and graphic design courses. This class is open to both 7th and 8th grade students and requires taking photos during out of school hours.


GETTING STARTED:

All students need the following for class:

    • A point and shoot camera, dslr camera or phone camera

    • USB Travel drive for storage of their photo images (4gb or larger)

    • Students may also store their photos on their Google Drive

    • Pen/pencil/Notebook for notes

    • Creativity & Imagination

    • Access to student Google Apps Account


Weekly Topics:

Week 1 :The Basics - Syllabus review and Intro to Pixlr & Adobe Photoshop

Composition -Elements and Principles of Design, Rule of Thirds, Depth of Field

Week 2 :Double Exposure

Week 3 :Exploring Scale

Week 4 :Blending Images & Textures

Week 5 : What is in my Head - Final Project

    • Reflection journal entries - Create a document in Google Named Digital Photography Reflections - Name (Ex. Digital Photo Reflections - Maria H.) and share to maria.hannigan@dcsdk12.org. Make sure you receive a confirmation of receipt from me.

    • Make sure your weekly reflections answer the following:

      • Feelings:What were your reactions and feelings to your weekly assignments?

      • Evaluation:What was good or bad about the experience? What was easy and difficult? Why?

      • Analysis: How did you apply the concepts you learned in class to your weekly work?

        • Composition -Elements and Principles of Design, Rule of Thirds, Depth of Field

      • Conclusions (general):What can be concluded, in a general sense, from these experiences and the analyses you have undertaken? How did it make you you feel?

      • Personal action plans:What are you going to do differently in this type of situation next time? What steps are you going to take on the basis of what you have learned for future photo projects?


ATTENDANCE/TARDY POLICY:

If a student is absent, they will have two days to make-up the assignment. Participation points will be waived. It is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor and to determine missed work. A student is considered tardy if they are not in their seat when the class begins. Attendance points will be deducted with each tardy.
