2019-20 2nd Grade
Welcome to the Second Grade!
Second grade is developing skills to be better prepared in the upper elementary grades. There is a focus on using a couple of websites all of the time to build confidence. In addition, the class partners with the homeroom to practice spelling and basic sentence writing. These are necessary skills students will need in the third grade. Students will also begin learning how to conduct research on the internet at a basic level.
Technology vocabulary
The year started off with an introduction to basic technology vocabulary. This introduction helps students throughout the year as they are learning specific vocabulary when using computers.
digital citizen
Students who are using the internet must learn how to use it appropriately. This means students need to understand ethical and respectful behavior. We use Common Sense Media for the lessons. The website has parent tips, movie reviews, and games to teach children how to be good digital citizens.
spelling practice
The beginning of the year, students used the Word Search Puzzle Maker to create puzzles for their spelling words. The program we used was found at abcya.com.
all about bats
The month of October is a fun month. Fall is coming and Halloween is the end. Students created bat fact books and learned about bats by watching a video.
spiders
Our unit on spiders had the students learning about our 8-legged friends. They learned about the different kinds of webs. They kept track of their notes using a digital notebook in slides.
Spelling sentences
Since we have come back from Christmas break, students have been working hard learning how to type and practicing keyboarding skills by typing sentences from their weekly spelling lists. Each week, students get a new set of keyboarding lessons, create a new Google doc and type 10 sentences, and create a word search. They are busy, busy, busy!
