LEARNING ABOUT THE SIMPLE MACHINES
Inclined plane – a simple machine that is a flat, sloping surface. It changes the SIZE of the force. Ex: hill, Stairs, ramp, slide, escalator
Wedge – a simple machine that is an inclined plane that moves. A wedge changes the SIZE of the force. Ex: knife, door stop, teeth, ax, arrow, peelers, grater, shovel
Screw – a simple machine that is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder to form a spiral. A screw changes the SIZE of the force. Ex: jar lids, bottom of light bulb, drills, corkscrew, winding stairs, screw
Wheel and Axle – a simple machine that consists of 2 circular objects of different sizes that are attached in such a way that they rotate together. A wheel and axle changes the SIZE of the force. Ex: steering wheel, screw driver
Lever – A simple machine that is a solid bar that rotates around a fixed point (fulcrum). The bar can be straight or curved. A lever changes theDIRECTION of the force. Ex: see saw, wheel barrow, baseball bat, body parts, bottle opener, tweezers
Pulley – a simple machine that consists of a grooved wheel with a rope or cable that rides in the groove.
