Classroom Expectations
Students need to come to class with the necessary school supplies. Students will be provided with a list of the supplies required for each of your classes. You will have until the end of the first week of school to bring in the required materials. Typically the required supplies include pens, pencils, spiral notebooks, and two-pocket folders. You may borrow a pen or pencil from your teachers, but then you can not earn full points during that class period. Students can buy some school supplies from the School Store.
Part of your grade will be based on your class participation. The points you earn in class will become your participation grade. If there is a discussion or activity in class, you are expected to take part in it. There will be units in which the only grade you are earning each day is your participation grade (for example, completing a scale diagram project, watching a movie, having a discussion, etc.)
Completing homework is mandatory at Niles Central. Student homework will be graded and factored into quarter and semester grades. Homework may be independent assignments or extensions of assignments worked on in class.
Make-up work will only be accepted for full credit if a student missed an assignment due to an excused absence. The day a student returns to school, it is the student's responsibility to ask for the work that he/she missed. The student will have the number of days he/she was absent to make up the work. After an unexcused absence, late work will be given a maximum of 70%. If there is an unexcused absence, up to 50% of the grade earned will be recorded. Again, it is the student's responsibility to ask for the work on the day he/she returns to school. Students are welcome to make appointments to stay after school to make up work or to get extra help on assignments!
