Students in Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade, the Monarch Award is for you! You have a chance to be a voter and let your voice be heard about a book you like. Students across Illinois choose the winner of the Monarch Award from a list of twenty nominees. To participate, you must read or listen to at least five books from the list. Then you will be eligible to vote for your favorite from the list. We will read aloud at least five books during Library class so every student will be able to vote, but I encourage families to read at least five more so students will experience more of the books. Voting will take place near the end of February.
Second grade students have a special challenge: read at least 18 of the Monarch books to receive a special reward! They will get more information about this in library class.
Here is the list of Monarch books for 2025, with directions for 2nd graders!
In 2024, the Monarch Award winner was Chez Bob. It also won first place at Prospect!
