Language Arts

Language Arts includes the subjects of writing, grammar, and word study. Time is spent each week developing skills in each of these areas to produce students who can communicate effectively through written expression about a variety of topics in several different genres. Instruction includes strategies for researching and the use of technology in both the process and product.

Writing

Our writing units consist of:

  • Personal & Fiction Narrative

  • Informational/Nonfiction

  • Editorial

  • Poetry

The Writing Process includes: immersion in mentor texts, prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, publishing, and celebrating. We only have time for one writing lesson per week given the hybrid schedule. Therefore, students will be completing much of their writing at home. Your child's teacher will provide written feedback on assignments and will use WIN time each day to address specific writing needs.

Grammar

We have weekly grammar lessons where students learn rules for capitalization and punctation, correct common grammar mistakes, and identify parts of speech. Lessons are taught alongside our writing units so that students may apply these skills to their own writing. We will do our best to embed this into writing instruction as much as possible.

Word Study

Word study is weekly time for vocabulary and root word instruction. Students will be assessed frequently on vocabulary words. Once the words are introduced, the expectation is that they will study these words and their meanings at home daily. Students should be able to use the vocabulary word in a sentence with appropriate context clues. Students will also learn a variety of vocabulary words through social studies, science, math, and reading.
