ELA

In 5th grade English Language Arts, students will be working through four separate modules. Because skills in reading, writing, spelling, and grammar are inter-related, the four modules will focus on skills that will be taught in continuation throughout the year. I want my students to graduate 5th grade as strong writers and strong readers. Our year-long learning will promote this.

Readers will develop the depth of their comprehension skills through active reading strategies, as taught through The Comprehension Toolkit. During these lessons, students will read with a pencil in their hand, getting comfortable asking questions aloud and working through various texts and complexities.

Writers will enhance their writing through vocabulary development, accurate word choice, writing genre development. Students will write in both narrative and academic writing, distinguishing the styles and formality based on the reason for writing.

Our grammar and spelling units are designed to enhance the reading and writing experience. Strong vocabulary supports spelling and improves writing. Writing sentences with varied structures develops author's craft.
