MEET SCHEDULE:
THURSDAY, APRIL 11 at Canyon - Practice Meet with Creekside (This will run through a regular practice time..should end about 5:30)
WEDNESDAY, 4/17 at Canyon - Canyon, Creekside, Bancroft, Edendale,Manor
WEDNESDAY, 4/24 at James Logan (Union City) - IVC, Chavez,Newark, Canyon, Muir (We will need fully-cleared parent/guardian drivers, and will only be able to take as many athletes as we have rides for)
WEDNESDAY, 5/1 at Canyon - Canyon, IVC, Bancroft, Creekside, Muir
THURSDAY, 5/9 at Chabot College, Hayward - SACMAL Championships (Invite only, with limited numbers--mostly 8th graders; Again, we will need fully-cleared parent/guardian drivers)
This year, meets are scheduled to be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Everyone can participate in our regular-season meets, as long as they have been attending practices in the week leading up to the meet (or have excused absences for missed practices). Most of our meets will be held at Canyon, due to our excellent facility. Meets will begin at 3:45-4:00, and should be over between 6:00 and 6:30. The League Meet (date May 9) will tentatively be held at Chabot College, as we have done in past years. As the date/venue is set, Ms Shoptaw will let you know. The League meet is an invitation-only meet, with first priority given to 8th grade athletes.
Students may wear spikes as they compete (1/4” maximum), but they are NOT required. We will have track jerseys available for the students to use. If we run out of jerseys, then additional students will wear their P.E. shirts. All students should wear PE shorts for meets.
HOME MEETS—Students set up and take down our meets (set up right after school gets out, and put everything away after the meet ends). We always welcome parent volunteers at our meets—generally, to help with timing events, but sometimes to help run events.
AWAY MEETS—We will need parent drivers when we have Away Meets scheduled, as we will not have bussing available. Parent Drivers will need to provide Proof of Insurance, complete the Megan’s Law form and have seat belts for each passenger in the vehicle. (This information is available in the Athletic Packet)
BEFORE PRACTICING:
Athletic clearance completed and on file with the coaches—this is done ONLINE! (You must have this turned in, in order to practice!). If you have completed your Athletic clearance earlier this year, for another sport, you will not need to do it again, but you can add “Track” to your list of sports.
(To see the instructions, go to the Athletics page on the Canyon MS website: https://sites.google.com/a/cv.k12.ca.us/canyonathletics)
Financial contribution/donation ($75 for each sport) can submitted separately (checks written to “Canyon Middle School”).
There are no “cuts”—everyone participates, and competes based on time and effort in practice!
If you also want to try out for a “tryout sport” (Girls’ Soccer, Boys’ Volleyball, Golf, Cheer), please GO TO THOSE TRYOUTS. If you make that team, then that will be your Spring sport. If not, Track will be waiting for you!
PRACTICE SCHEDULE:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (all events—everyone)
FIRST PRACTICE—MONDAY, MARCH 13
PLEASE NOTE: For Week #1, we will only practice on Monday (3/13) and Wednesday (3/15). Regular days and times will resume Monday, March 20.
Practice Times: 3:30-5:00
Students will change into PE clothes for practice. Each student should have “running shoes”—these can be purchased fairly inexpensively. Sweats are also recommended! The Locker Rooms will NOT be available after practice, so street clothes and backpacks should be kept in hall lockers. Any backpacks brought up to the track are not secure, and should not contain anything valuable.
Students may bring bottled water and a healthy snack to practice, but should not bring sugared sodas or candy. Water fountains are available around the practice area.
If you are going to miss practice (for any reason), please write a note to Ms. Shoptaw (preferred method—this doesn’t need to be a doctor’s note); email (#2 preferred method), or call her phone extension (does not go straight to voice mail). Unexcused absences will cause a student to miss competing in meets.
If you have another event or practice that is regularly scheduled during our practice times (such as leaving early one day for piano lessons), we may be able to work out a compromise. However, you are expected to attend ALL practices to be eligible for competing in the meets.
TRACK MEETS:
The Meet Schedule is listed at the end of this paper, and will be starting during the week of April 17. (We may have a “practice meet” during the week of April 10—depending on response from the other SACMAL schools). The League Meet (date TBA, but sometime during the week of May 15) will tentatively be held at Chabot College, as we have done in past years (but not since 2019).
Parent Drivers will need to provide Proof of Insurance and have seat belts for each passenger in the vehicle. (This information is available in the Athletic Packet)
SCHEDULED EVENTS
100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, Mile, 4x100 Relay, Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Shotput, Discus.
Students are allowed to compete in 3 events and 1 relay at our meets (maximum). Some events have limited numbers of entrants, and so students may be asked to compete in various events at the meets, and may not do the same events in each meet. If you are asked to participate in a particular event, the expectation is that you will do that event—non-participation can lead to not being scheduled into events at the next meet.
IF IT RAINS:
We do sometimes hold practices on rainy days…it may involve running in the hallways. Please listen for announcements regarding whether or not practice or meets are cancelled. We are sometimes at the mercy of the elements, and will wait as long as possible, in the hopes that the skies will clear for us! Ms. Shoptaw will also post “Yes/No” practice signs at the front of the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms.
