Geometry

Welcome to eighth-grade Geometry! In this course, you will explore complex geometric situations and deepen your explanations of geometric relationships, using your sense-making, reasoning, arguing, explaining, critiquing, and modeling skills to develop both a conceptual as well as procedural understanding of Geometry. My goal is for all of you to develop a growth mindset approach to mathematics focused on individual effort, strategic thinking, and group work that will prepare you for success in upper-level math and science courses as well as to deal effectively with mathematical situations you will encounter in real life. The curriculum includes standards from the conceptual categories of Common Core Geometry and Statistics and Probability. A lot of emphases is placed in this course in understanding Geometry through Transformations. The textbook for the course is Core Connections Geometry from College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM). Instructional time will focus on six critical areas: (1) establish criteria for congruence of triangles based on rigid motions; (2) establish criteria for similarity of triangles based on dilations and proportional reasoning; (3) develop explanations of circumference, area, and volume formulas; (4) study right triangles and trigonometric functions; (5) prove basic geometric theorems; and (6) extend work with probability.
