Writing

To build a foundation for college and career readiness, students need to learn to use writing as a way of offering and supporting opinions, demonstrating understanding of the subjects they are studying, and conveying real and imagined experiences and events. They learn to appreciate that a key purpose of writing is to communicate clearly to an audience. They will learn to adapt the form and content of their writing to accomplish a particular task and purpose.

Three forms of writing we will be focusing on are:

  • Opinion
  • Informative/Explanatory
  • Narrative

Throughout the year, the students will be developing writing pieces based on these three main areas.

As we examine our writing, we will consider the characteristics of good writing, including:

  • our ideas
  • organization
  • voice
  • word choice
  • sentence fluency
  • conventions
  • presentation

Our writing workshop begins with a mini-lesson on a targeted skill, followed by students engaged in writing - independent, guided, or "investigations." I will be conferring with students individually during this time. We conclude with a group share.
