Welcome to the Columbia County Office for the Aging

The Columbia County Board of Supervisors and the Office for the Aging are committed to assisting our older citizens to remain in their own homes and to actively participate in family and community life.

In 1975, the Board of Supervisors created the Office for the Aging as a unit of local government to serve and be the focal point in Columbia County for matters related to aging.  Through advocacy, services and planning and coordination, the Office for the Aging addresses the priority needs of our older residents.

The services described on this site are a range of community-based and home care services.  While some individuals need assistance for only a short period of time, others become increasingly frail and will require aid on a regular, ongoing basis.  Staff can help you select the most appropriate type of assistance to meet your individual needs and will arrange and authorize those services you decide upon.

Celebrating Older Americans Month: Flip the Script on Aging

Celebrated every May, Older Americans Month (OAM) is led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL). Established in 1963, OAM is a time to not only recognize older Americans' contributions but also to inspire and motivate us all, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving the older adults in our communities.

This year’s theme, 'Flip the Script on Aging,' focuses on the importance of combating ageism to transform how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging. By challenging stereotypes and highlighting the benefits of healthy aging, such as increased wisdom, resilience, and experience, we can change the narrative around growing older.

“Ageism shapes both our perception of older adults and their self-view,” said Nina Benvenuto, OFA Administrator. “A positive perspective on aging empowers individuals to fully engage in their communities.”

What can YOU do to combat ageism?

  • Celebrate the contributions of people of all ages in the workplace and our community.

  • Avoid ageist statements when talking about growing older.

  • Promote fact-based messages about older adults’ abilities and value to communities.
