A.P. Spanish and Culture

Academic Year 2023-2024 (Please keep this syllabus in your 3 ring binder).

 

Course Objectives: The goal of this class is to enable students to improve their proficiency across the three modes of communication (Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational). These will further develop their  listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the target language. 

 

 

Course Expectation/Policies/Rules:

 

·       Student is expected to behave responsibly, respectfully, trustworthy and show good citizenship.

 

·       Classes will be conducted in Spanish, except for clarification purposes. You are expected to communicate in Spanish with your class peers and teacher. Lack of effort and/or failure to do so will result in significant loss of Class Participation Points. (teacher’s discretion)

 

·   Cell-phones and/or other Electronic Devices:

 

Must be kept out of reach and/or stay inside your backpack/purse, on silent mode at all times during Instruction (Class).

These may be used only when teacher allows for you to do so.

Failing to comply with these rules will result in the following:

·       Loss of Participation Points.

·       Administrative Discipline.

 

 

 

Disciplinary Action:

 

Class Disruption and/or not complying with Classroom Rules will be subject to Administrative Discipline. [teacher’s discretion]

 

Gradebook, Homework and Class Assignments, Absences:

 

·       Homework will be given on a regular basis, and it will be turned in on time to Google-Classroom

accordingly. Please be advised that, Homework is a complement to meeting course objectives.

Late work will not be accepted, unless special circumstances apply (teacher’s discretion).

·       Class Assignments will be given on a regular basis. Completing these on time is essential to student’s Class Participation Points. These will be turned in for Credit.

 

·       Make-up work is the responsibility of the student. (please see Student Handbook Homework policy). Will make arrangements accordingly.

 

 

 

·       Gradebook Discrepancies: Students have up to 10 school days* from the day the Assignment and/or quiz was given to: Makeup/discuss missing assignments, and/or not uploaded scores on the Gradebook, as well as, other related course matters (e.g., Test, Quizzes and/or Class Assignments*) Once grace period is over, the score for these assignments/quizzes will be given a “0”.

 

·   Excused Absences: Students have one day per excused absence to make-up a missing assignment/s in order to receive full credit; this, according to “Parent Student Handbook”. Students are responsible to get updated and informed about their missing assignments, as well as, to check: Student-Parent Connect on a regular basis.

 

·   Please be advice that, being absent does not excuse students from Assessments and/or other Class assignments.

 

 

Assessments (announced or not): These will cover material that was presented in class, practiced in class and/or assigned as homework. Others may come from “Authentic Material” (e.g. material never seen before) readings, writing prompts, and/or audios.

 

 

Projects***: These are geared to help students expand their language acquisition skills, communicative repertoires, and serve to demonstrate advancement in the familiarization and understanding of the Hispanic Culture. Furthermore, these are essential to help students get ready for the Interpersonal/Presentational components of the A.P. Exam and/or to optimize student’s speaking skills in the target language. Every student is expected to Present their Projects in front of the Class.

                   79-70   (C)

                   69-60   (D)

                            0.0   (F)

 

Notation on Extra Credit (if given):

·   It cannot exceed 2% of the Course Grade.

·       1 subject college ruled 8 ½” x 11”, 200 pages spiral notebook (for Spanish Only)

·       3 ring binder for Spanish handouts

·       Composition notebook

·       Spanish/English dictionary***

·       Desire to Learn*
