Children's Book Week

We are excited about celebrating Children’s Book Week. During this week the students can participate in different contests to celebrate reading. We are going to have a “Reading Museum” in the library. Any student may enter their work. If two students work together on a commercial, they must be in the same grade.

Categories will be:

1. Digital Commercial (Create a commercial of favorite book, author, or series. Submit by email, flash drive, or disc. Please submit by one of these three methods. I can not accept text or facebook entries. Must be at least 1 minute long and no longer than 2.5 minutes) Commercial may highlight a favorite book, favorite series or inspire others to read.

2. Shoebox Diorama (scene of a favorite book must be displayed inside a shoebox. Entries that are not in a shoebox will be displayed, however, not judged)

3. Make a Statue/Sculpture of a book character (must be three dimensional)

4. Paper Mache Art

5. Character Puppet (create a puppet of a book character)

All entries for these contests are due by Tuesday, February 13, 2018. Entries must be labeled with student’s first and last name, grade and teacher’s name on back or bottom of entry. Please do not display name on top or front of entry. The student’s name must be on their entry!

Tuesday, February 13, 2018 will be “Readers are Leaders” day. We all know that we must read to succeed. Community leaders have all been readers. Come dressed as your favorite leader or a leader that you would like to become. (examples: fireman, police, judge, teacher, doctor/nurse, etc.)

Wednesday, February 14, 2018 is school-wide pajama day (pajamas will need to follow dress code). We will have a bedtime story read aloud over live Bulldog TV.

Friday, February 16, 2018 is Book Character Dress Up Day.

Students are allowed to wear a costume of a book character. (This is not a Halloween costume dress up day.) A character is a fictional person or animal from a story, not a real life person. Some examples include: Junie B. Jones, Harry Potter, Arthur, Franklin, Cat in the Hat, Clifford, Pete the Cat, the Three Pigs, Fancy Nancy, Little Red Riding Hood, Fly Guy, etc.(Cam Newton, Peyton Manning, sports stars, etc. are not fictional characters) Students need to know the character and the title of the book they represent as well as, carry a copy of their book in the parade with them. We want onlookers to recognize the book and the character too. If you do not have a copy of the book, I will try to help locate a copy for your student to carry in the parade. Please have your child see me about a book prior to Thursday, February 15, 2018. We will have the parade on Friday afternoon at 2:00 to recognize those students that participate in Character Dress Up Day. Only those students who have followed the above guidelines will be allowed to march in the parade. I can’t wait to see all of the creative costumes.

There will be other events taking place that encourage reading during this week. Please encourage your child to take part in these exciting events. During this week it is my goal to encourage children to be excited about reading.
