Children’s Book Week

February 1 – 5, 2016

We are excited about celebrating Children’s Book Week. During this week the students can participate in different contests to celebrate reading. We are going to have a “Reading Museum” in the library. Any student may enter their work. Categories will be:

1. Digital Commercial(Create a commercial of favorite book, author, or series. Submit by email or by flash drive)

2. Shoebox Diorama ( scene of a favorite book must be displayed inside a shoebox)

3. Make a Statue/Sculpture of a book character (must be three dimensional)

4. Paper Mache Art

5. Character Puppet (create a puppet of a book character)

All entries for these contests are due by Monday, February 1, 2016. Entries need to be labeled with student’s first and last name, grade and teacher’s name on back or bottom of entry. Please do not display name on top or front of entry.

Thursday, February 4, 2016 is school-wide pajama day (pajamas will need to follow dress code)

Title 1 is sponsoring a “Reading Awakens the Force Within” event. There will be a presentation for parents in the gym from 7:45-8:00am, which will be followed by an opportunity for parents to find a place in the school to read with their child/children. This event will end at 8:30am.

Friday, February 5, 2016 is Book Character Dress Up Day.

Students are allowed to wear a costume of a book character. (This is not a Halloween costume dress up day.) A character is a fictional person or animal from a story, not a real life person. Some examples include: Junie B. Jones, Harry Potter, Arthur, Franklin, Cat in the Hat, Clifford, Laura Ingalls, the Three Pigs, Fancy Nancy, etc.(Cam Newton, Peyton Manning, sports stars, etc. are not fictional characters) Students need to know the character and the title of the book they represent as well as, carry a copy of their book in the parade with them. We want onlookers to recognize the book and the character too. If you do not have a copy of the book, I will try to help locate a copy for your student to carry in the parade. Please have your child see me about a book prior to Thursday, February 4, 2016. We will have the parade on Friday afternoon at 2:10 to recognize those students that participate in Character Dress Up. Only those students who have followed the above guidelines will be allowed to march in parade. I can’t wait to see all of the creative costumes.

There will be other events taking place that encourage reading during this week. Please encourage your child to take part in these exciting events. During this week it is my goal to encourage children to be excited about reading.
