Volunteer/Leadership/Links

Each year there are new opportunities offered to students in all grade levels that will provide leadership training, academic supplemental learning, and team building. Some colleges offer specific academic areas for a more in depth study depending on the interests of today's student. Many unique opportunities are just a click away. Please make sure you search online for areas that may suit your needs. Feel free to come by guidance or email a counselor if you need help getting started. Here are just a few that are offered consistently to get you started...good luck!

TRIO PROGRAM:

Sponsored by CCC through the US Dept. of Education, this program is for students in grades 6th-12th who reside in a household with limited income and/or are a potential first generation college student. Cost is free! TRIO advisers are located at all 4 Cleveland County high schools to assist in career/college exploration, advising, personal success coaching, tutoring, SAT/ACT prep, financial planning, college tours, and cultural enrichment opportunities. Contact a counselor to be referred to the CHS TRIO contact.

Governor's School

This program is one of the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. The program is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in selected performing/visual arts areas. The school is held for six weeks at Salem College and Meredith College. The program offers a non-credit curriculum for 800 students statewide. Students choose an area of interest to study: Art, Choral Music, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music, Mathematics, English, French, Spanish, Natural Science, or Social Science. Eligible students must meet the academically or intellectually gifted multiple criteria as established by North Carolina Governor's School. The nomination process begins during the fall semester. Summer Ventures

Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented students who may pursue careers in science and mathematics. The program brings together rising juniors and seniors in residential settings for four weeks of study. Six campuses of the University of North Carolina system host SVSM; Appalachian State, East Carolina, North Carolina Central, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington, and Western Carolina. Admissions to programs are based on academic ability, science and mathematics motivation, and emotional maturity. An admissions committee appointed by SVSM selects approximately 600 finalists to participate in the program. Application forms are sent to high school mathematics and science department heads and school counseling offices in mid-October and application deadline is the end of January. Project Uplift

Project Uplift is a program sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that provides American Indian, African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, and students from other historically under-served communities to learn about college. Selected students are rising seniors enrolled or will be enrolled in college preparatory curriculum (including one AP class, one year of foreign language, and mathematics through Geometry or Algebra II), in the top 25% of their class, and are involved in extracurricular activities. Students spend two days on campus learning about admissions and academic opportunities at the University. It is an all-expense paid program, including meals, room, and program materials. North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics

NCSSM is a public, residential high school located in Durham, NC for juniors and seniors that provides specialized curriculum in the areas of math, science, and technology. Application process begins during a student's sophomore year. Interested students should visit the NCSSM website at www.ncssm.edu and see Mrs. Roberts in guidance for more information.

Science And Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership In Tomorrow's Endeavors is a five-day summer adventure at North Carolina State University for selected high school sophomores. SATELLITE scholars are exposed to NC State's science and technology resources and have opportunity to explore future educational and career opportunities. Forty students are selected state-wide to attend the camp. Cost is $25. See Mrs. Roberts in guidance for more information.

YMCA Black Achievers

Program designed to help minorities grades 9-12 plan for college and prepare for success. Student participants choose one of the following career clusters; law and government, communication, medical, education, and business. The clusters meet once each month and attendance is required. Underclassmen that participate in the program at least two years and maintain a 2.0 GPA are guaranteed a scholarship in their senior year. There may be a small registration fee. Challenge yourself by taking college courses with fellow high-achieving students

Explore faith and learning under the instruction of exceptional Christian scholars

Live in dorms, travel to field experiences, and lay the foundation for success in college

Qualify for a full-ride scholarship to Gardner-Webb University

The Honors Experience at Gardner-Webb is a one-week college immersion for academically gifted and talented students who are currently in the 9th-11th grade. The program is held on Gardner-Webb’s main campus in Boiling Springs, NC each summer.

NC Youth Legislative Assembly

The NC Youth Legislative Assembly is a mock legislative session where high school students voice their opinions and vote on issues concerning local, state, and national government. The three day session is patterned after the NC General Assembly. YLA is open to all North Carolina students, grades 9-12, who are interested in learning more about government and the legislative process. Attendance is limited to 200 youth. United States Senate Youth Program

Student Government Representatives are eligible to apply in their junior or senior year for this program. Two students from every state are selected to attend the one week program in Washington DC. For more information see Mrs. Roberts in guidance.

Catalyst Conference

Sponsored by UNC-Chapel Hill. Eighty high school students (grades 9-11) across the state come to UNC for a weekend-long exploration of social issues affecting America's youth. Workshops, discussion groups, and activities are designed to help students become advocates for positive social change. Registration fee is $30. For more information see Mrs. Roberts in guidance.

C-CATS (Clemson's Challenge for Academically Talented Students)

Weekend programs for 9th and 10th grade students in the top 10 percent of their class. Participants take part in high-adventure group dynamics and high-performance academic workshops. Learn what it takes to get into Clemson and other selective universities. For more information see Mrs. Roberts in guidance.

Cleveland County Teen Court Volunteer Program

Teen Court is a real court and part of our judicial system in Cleveland County. Teen volunteers take the roles of defense attorneys, prosecuting attorneys, clerks and jurors for real court cases, which would otherwise be heard in Juvenile Court. The Teen Court Program is designed for juvenile offenders, between the ages of 12 and 17, who are willing to accept responsibility for their actions. The Teen Court’s mission is to deliver a constructive sentence to the juvenile based on his/her offense. Teen Court is held in the evenings each month in the Cleveland County Courthouse. Sessions begin at 5:30 p.m. and end between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. depending on the number of cases that are heard. AS A VOLUNTEER: You receive community service/volunteer hours; learn about the criminal justice system first hand, gain public speaking, and organization and communication skills. DARE Role Models

Selected Juniors and Seniors help promote the elementary DARE program by encouraging younger children to remain drug and alcohol free as they move into middle and high school. Role models are selected around the beginning of March and represent Crest High by helping teachers, speaking to 5th grade students, chaperoning the DARE dance, and helping with DARE graduation. If you are interested in volunteering as a role model please contact Mrs. Roberts.
