Guidelines and Information
Welcome! We are looking forward to a year full of reading and fun. Below you will find some information about Battle of the Books that will help us get off to a smooth start.
The purpose of the Battle of the Books team is to read books, to retain knowledge about those books, and to be able to apply that knowledge in answering questions about those books in a quiz bowl style competition.
Each year, the book list for Battle of the Books is provided by the North Carolina School Library Media Association. A link to the 2023-2024 book list can be found at the bottom of this webpage.
Students will be expected to read a minimum of 16 books from the list in order to be part the team. Students are also expected to write at least 5 questions for each book that they read independently. A list of question writing guidelines along with a timeline for reading books and writing questions can be found in the next section of this webpage.
If you have any questions about Battle of the Books, or need any further information please contact me during school hours at (704)476-8223 ext. 4218, or email me at cfroebuck@clevelandcountyschools.org.
Thank you,
Mrs. Cassie Roebuck, Media Specialist/BOB Coach

BOB Question Writing
If handwriting your questions, make sure your handwriting is neat and legible. If you have a hard time writing neatly, type your questions before turning them in.
Begin each question with the phrase "In which book."
Use present tense, if possible, and correct grammar.
Character names and names of major setting locations cannot be used. Proper names of places remote to a setting can be used (Ex: if the main character lives in Georgia, but has always wanted to visit Italy, the question could read: "In which book does a character save money to visit Italy?"
Include the title and author (as it appears on the official book list) at the top of your questions for each book.
Include the page number of the answer at the end of each question.
Avoid questions that can be answered by more than one title.
Make sure questions are clear, concise, and correct.
Do not use information written by people other than the author when writing questions. Epilogues, Prologues, & notes written by the author can be included and will be used at competition.
