New Initial NCAA Eligibility Standards
For Student-Athletes Initially Enrolling Full-Time on or after August 1, 2016
Requirements for Division I Schools
Qualifiers are eligible for financial aid, practice, and competition during the first academic year in residence.
A High school graduate who presents the following academic qualifications:
(A) Successfully completes a core curriculum of at least 16 academic courses, which must meet the
following breakdown:
a. English 4 Units
b. Mathematics(3 years of math courses at the level of Algebra I or higher) 3 Units
c. Natural or physical science (including at least 1 lab course) 2 Units
d. Additional course in English, mathematics, or natural science 1 Unit
e. Social Science 2 Units
f. Additional academic courses ( Above mentioned areas, foreign language, etc) 4 Units
(B) Meets the Core GPA and SAT/ACT requirements of the Initial Eligibility Index for Qualifiers (see back).
(C) Completes at least 10 of the 16 required core courses before the start of his/her seventh semester of high school.
Of these required 10 core courses, 7 must be in the areas of English, mathematics, and natural or physical science.
Academic Redshirt:
A high school graduate who successfully completes 16 core course units in the areas identified above for qualifiers, but does not meet the requirements of the Initial Eligibility Index for Qualifiers. In order to be deemed an Academic Redshirt, the student must meet the Initial Eligibility Index for Academic Redshirts (see back).
Academic redshirts may receive institutional athletics grant-in-aid and may practice on-campus (or at the institution’s regular practice facility) during the first term, of enrollment, but may NOT compete during the first academic year in residence. In addition, in order to be eligible to practice during subsequent terms of the initial year of enrollment, an academic redshirt must successfully complete nine semester (or eight quarter) hours of academic credit at the college or university they are attending.
Non-qualifier:
A student who does not graduate from high school or who does not meet the requirements of either the Initial Eligibility Index for Qualifiers or the Initial Eligibility Index for Academic Redshirts ( see back).
Non-qualifiers are not eligible for practice, competition, or athletics grant-in-aid during the first academic year in residence. However, they may receive non-athletics institutional financial aid that is not from an athletics source and is based solely on financial need.
Note: Division II schools will require 16 core units for students enrolling in 9th grade in the Fall of 2013 or after, in order to be a qualifier for athletic scholarships.
