Please check the TSA regulations for packing purposes. Please check Southwest baggage regulations. We will check bags (one per person). Please bring just a small bag for on the plane that fits under the seat (example would be a backpack).
Just a suggestion from past participant moms: Make a list of all the things that you are taking so that students can check that list when we get ready to depart from the hotel on the last day. So far we have been good at not leaving anything behind.
Schedule for the morning will be determined based on finalist participation in the in the Finals for History Bee. (A lot of Sunday and Monday will be determined as "want". We want the students to be able to get as much in as they can, but we don't want to wipe them out.
We do have a 10:00 reserved time if no one makes the finals. Worldof Coca-Cola (after talking back and forth with them, we will only get a reserved time if we have more than 25 in our group, I am going to email her back to see if we could get a reservation time to help us out.

Things to discuss at 4/20 Meeting:
Review birth dates, phone numbers, name spelling on info sheet and airline ticketing, medical needs of students while gone, and review shirts and sizes. T-shirt colors/we have permission to use logos of competition.
T-shirt colors: Cotton: Carolina Blue, Mint Green, and Daisy. You will be getting a free t-shirt at the competition as well.
Look over itinerary for questioning. Those parents, etc. that will also be attending need to indicate the purchase of city passes with the group or on their own.
Talk about sharing all phone numbers for contact of everyone (permission to do so). Safety concerns?
Talk about forms for signature for students who do not have parents going to be escorted by one of our attending parents if the need arises (i.e.: going to restroom, going up to room if needed, during competition if times cross to eat lunch with another student and parent)

We will compile a list of phone numbers as we get closer to make sure all numbers are accurate. We will also include numbers for hotel as well.
***These items are more for me to keep track of information, but please feel free to look them over.
TSA Regulations:
When processing through a screening checkpoint, each traveler is allowed one bag in order to limit the total volume of liquids, aerosols and gels. Consolidating products into one bag and X-raying them separately from the carry-on bag enables security officers to quickly clear all items.
3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume); 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3.4 ounce (100ml) container size is a security measure.
Be prepared. Each time TSA searches a carry-on it slows down the line. Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a faster and easier checkpoint experience.
3-1-1 is for short trips. If in doubt, consider putting your liquids in checked luggage.
Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint. Officers may need to open these items to conduct additional screening.
Per TSA regulations, all customers traveling on AirTran Airways will be restricted to one bag plus one small, personal item. The carry-on bag must be stowed under the seat in front of the passenger or in an approved overhead bin. Garment bags and small musical instruments are considered one of the allotted carryon pieces.
Personal-type items include purses, briefcases, cameras, food containers, or laptops (case included). Pet carriers are considered either a personal item or a carryon item.
The following items are not considered carryon bags or personal-type items and are not counted against the “one-bag plus one personal-type item” limit:
A child restraint device for a ticketed child with a reserved seat or when complimentary, available space exists.
Assistive/mobility devices for individuals with a disability. There is no limit to the number of assistive/mobility devices a customer can bring onboard the aircraft.
Outer garments or other wearable articles of clothing.
Food for consumption during flight contained in disposable packaging.
Walking canes or umbrellas.
Dimensions
If any of the dimensions below are exceeded, the bag or personal item will be considered too large to be a carry-on item.
A carry-on bag must not exceed 24” long + 16” wide + 10” tall for a total combined linear measurement of 50 inches.
For a personal item, such as a briefcase, laptop, purse, or camera to fit under the seat in front of the customer, it must not exceed 17” long + 12” wide + 8.5” tall.
The suitability of carry-on baggage will be determined by AirTran Airways.
Knives or sharp objects will not be allowed in carry-on baggage or past the security checkpoint. Any sharp items you may need in your travels should be packed in your checked baggage. Customers dependent upon syringe-injected medications may carry on such items. The TSA has instituted specific rules for carry-on of liquids, gels and aerosols. We encourage you to review the security rules for these carry-on items.
Please see the TSA’s web site for a list of prohibited carryon items.

Friday Night Events
On Friday night at the Crystal Gateway Marriott (***1-703-920-3230) from 6:30-9pm, we will offer a Geography Challenge tournament and a sports and entertainment History Bee tournament. Both tournaments cost $15 per student to compete in. We will have prizes for the top finishers, but neither is an “official” national championship. Students who competed in the official US Geography Challenge National Championships or the National Sports History Bee or the National Entertainment History Bee held in conjunction with our high school national championships are ineligible to replay the event they competed in then. Registration will be done by emailing registered schools in early May. These events are entirely optional. There *may* also be an opportunity for adults to compete for $20, though the students have first priority to sign up for the rooms we have at our disposal. If your students are planning on competing in the events on Friday evening, which are entirely optional, then you should plan on arriving at the hotel by 5:30pm. Otherwise, you will need to come to the hotel any time from 2pm-11pm on Friday evening to check in with National History Bowl staff, even if you are not staying at the hotel!

The Elementary School Division will include five (5) Preliminary Rounds for each participating student. The Preliminary Rounds will involve five Multiple Choice questions asked to each participating student and one specific Oral Competition question asked to each individual participant. The students with the top ten (10) scores at the conclusion of the Preliminary Rounds will advance to the Championship Round. The Championship Round will use questions read orally and answered with a buzzer system to determine the National History Bee: Elementary School National Champion.
National History Bee: Middle School National Championship
The Middle School Competition will look very similar to the Regional Finals. Each student will compete in six (6) Preliminary Rounds of questions which are read aloud to a group of students.
