By the end of grade 3, students are to be able to show number sense with numbers from 0-999. This includes flexible representing of numbers (for example, 100 can be 10 groups of 10, 2 groups of 50, 100 one units, 5 groups of 20, 25 groups of 4, etc.). We practise skip counting to bridge over 100 (95, 100, 105, 110, 115....995), ordering numbers by comparing the value of digits in their place, determining which numbers are less than or greater than other numbers, and rounding.
Each week, the students are learning and practicing different addition and subtraction strategies to support their learning and faster recall of the 0-20 addition/subtraction facts.
We expand on learning by connecting mathematical concepts to real world problem solving such as finances.
Important concepts:
counting mixed combinations of coins and bills up to $100:
totalling up a set of coins and bills
using different combinations of coins and bills to make the same amount
understanding that payments can be made in flexible ways (e.g., cash, cheques, credit, electronic transactions, goods and services)
understanding that there are different ways of earning money to reach a financial goal (e.g., recycling, holding bake sales, selling items, walking a neighbour’s dog)
It is important that learners become proficient in their basic facts in order to do more complicated math problems with ease. We recommend that learners practice their basic facts every week. 5-10 minutes everyday would be best.
