You can do this! Here are some tips for successfully making art at home.
Move
-Use your art break (prior to 2pm) to move your body. Get outside if you can, walk around the block a few times, do some jumping jacks. You've likely been sitting all day and need a reset. Movement helps with focus and alertness--it's a fact. Also, be sure to drink lots of water during the day, since dehydration can make you tired.
Protect
-Put on your painting clothes and/or wear an apron.
-Protect your work surfaces with an old towel, a drop cloth, even a sheet of plastic. Don't forget the floor.
-Establish a safe, dry spot for your laptop, if you are using one. Keep away from paint and food. Also, take care to not get paint on the keyboard while you work.
-Locate a storage space for your supplies and a space to store your art board/work in-progress. You'll want a space where work won't be bent or damaged. (For example, under your bed, on top of a shelf etc.)
Prepare
-Review Ms. Kalmes' Workspace set-up tips to set up your work space.
-Clean off your palette as needed, sharpen your pencils, etc. Locate a couple of paint rags as needed (old tee-shirts or socks work well). Do not use the bathroom hand towels ;)
-Minimize distractions. Close the door if you're able. Put away your academic work, and close your social media accounts. (Tough I know, but please do it!) No texting or watching videos during studio time. You want to find flow in your work--it won't happen if you are sending emojis while you paint. I promise. Also, this is your chance to get a much-needed break from screen time.
-Choose your music/podcasts, and gather your snacks.
-Check your lighting. You want to make sure that your surface is evenly lit. Work next to a window if you are able. You want to make sure you aren't squinting.
-Open a window if you can to get some ventilation.
Work
-If using acrylic, make sure your brushes are kept in water, and not lying next to your palette. Acrylic dries quickly and can ruin a brush in no time.
-Ask a question anytime. Even if I am talking with other students, you are welcome to join and wait a few minutes until I am free to help you.
-Step back from your work. You can take your board outside and prop it on the stoop if that helps. Make sure to do this a minimum of twice each class.
Clean
-Put your materials away and/or turn around your painting so you get a break from it (if that helps you).
-Wash those brushes thoroughly, with soap! Check, repeat, and reshape. (Do not leave them in water overnight--that weakens the brush.) Also, if you have more than one sink where you live, ask your guardian which one they would like you to use. Remember, you want to minimize how much paint goes down the pipes, so wipe as much paint off the bristles as possible before washing.
-Store clean, dry brushes bristles up in a jar. Never store damp or dry brushes bristles down. If you wish to buy additional brushes, here are some options: https://www.dickblick.com/items/05564-0049/
