Cannon Falls Schools keep it R.E.A.L!

Respect + Effort+ Attitude=LEARNING!

PBIS Keep it REAL

Children and adults at our school treat each other with respect and take responsibility for our learning and actions within a safe and positive environment. The people at Cannon Falls Area Elementary show respect, good effort, and a positive attitude so everyone can learn.

Students are recognized for keeping it ”R.E.A.L” through distribution of R.E.A.L Deal tickets in our weekly school-wide drawings. Students can use their tickets for intangible rewards.

Responsive Classroom

Over the summer, ISD 252 has sent a member from each grade level to attend Responsive Classroom training as a way to phase our the clip-chart program that was used in our school. I had the opportunities to attend last summer. What is Responsive Classroom?

What is Responsive Classroom?

Responsive classroom is an evidence-based approach to education that focuses on the strong relationship between academic success and social-emotional learning. The Responsive Classroom approach empowers educators to create a safe, joyful, and engaging learning communities where students have a sense of belonging and feel significant. There are a lot of facets to this approach and I ask that you partner with me at home in order to make the approach work to the best of its ability.

What is the difference ?

One of the biggest differences with Responsive Classroom is the reward system. The Responsive Classroom approach helps students internalize positive behaviors and expectations through reinforcing positive language. With PBIS students will still have the opportunity to use their real deal tickets, but in our classroom we will be focusing on academic and social goals. When students meet their goal individually or as a class, we will be celebrate their achievements. Each day, students will start with an engaging day. We will focus on building a strong sense of community, and build social and academic skills through our morning meeting.

Self Regulation

This year your child will be learning about self-regulation, and how to have self-control. At some point, your child will be asked to take a break. Using self-regulation and techniques provided your child may take a break to help regain control when they are just beginning to lose it. Taking a break allows students to calm down, relax, and rejoin the class with dignity. This is not a punishment. In our class taking a break is not a negative thing. If student consistently has lack of self-control, he/she may receive a referral. In addition, he/she will have a problem solving conference with me.

As students learn our classroom procedures, and expectations; I will continue to keep you informed about aspects to the Responsive Classroom approach.

Revised Problem Solving Sheet

Problem Solving Sheet

A problem solving conference is a great way to build a relationship while solving a problem. I will be using a problem solving conference with your child if there is a problem that persists. In partnership, I'll be sure to send a copy home to you.
