Historical Context 3,000 BCE - 500 BCE: A food surplus leads to more food, more time, more people, and the opportunity for these people to specialize. Eventually, large groups of people chose to settle in river valleys because of the access to natural resources. Due to these factors, river valley civilizations developed EIGHT unique characteristics that make them unique(writing, centralized government and law codes, social classes, organized religion, specialization, art/ architecture, infrastructure, big cities.

Organized RELIGION develops around the belief in many gods and goddesses (polytheism)

Centralized GOVERNMENT and first written law codes

Governments organized the development of advanced ART, ARCHITECTURE and public INFRASTRUCTURE

Big CITIES start to look and interact beyond their borders, trading and conquering one another
