STEP 1: Learn about Leadership Styles
Leadership comes in many forms! Below is a list of common leadership styles.
Democratic Leadership:
A democratic leader involves the group in decision-making. They listen to everyone’s ideas and opinions before making choices. This type of leader encourages teamwork and collaboration.
Example: A student council president who asks classmates for input on school activities.
Autocratic Leadership:
An autocratic leader makes decisions alone without asking for input from others. They tell people what to do and expect it to be followed. While this can be effective in certain situations, it may not be the best for encouraging creativity or teamwork.
Example: A coach who gives strict instructions without asking players for their opinions.
Transformational Leadership:
A transformational leader inspires and motivates others to work toward a common goal, often by creating a vision and encouraging change. They focus on helping people grow and achieve their full potential.
Example: A teacher who motivates students to push themselves and think outside the box.
Laissez-Faire Leadership:
A laissez-faire leader gives the group a lot of freedom to make decisions on their own. They don't get too involved and trust the team to handle things. This works best when the group is self-motivated and knows what to do.
Example: A group project leader who steps back and lets team members manage tasks independently.
Servant Leadership:
A servant leader focuses on helping/ supporting others. They put the needs of the team first and aim to empower others to succeed. This kind of leader leads by example and works to serve the team.
Example: A student who helps classmates with their schoolwork and listens to their concerns.
Make a list of tips or qualities you think are important to know about leadership that you could share with other kids your age.
