Homeless Student Support

Many families in Wisconsin have found themselves to be families in transition without a place to call home. Our goal is to reduce barriers to school enrollment and achievement so that students who are experiencing homelessness have a full and equitable opportunity to succeed in school.

Services include, but are not limited to:

• School supplies

• Resources/Referrals to community agencies, as needed

• Comparable transportation

• Breakfast and lunch programs

• Community education about homelessness and mobility

• Coordination with community partners

Who is homeless?

Students who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, and are living in:

• A shelter or transitional living program

• Sharing housing due to economic hardship or similar reason

• Car, park, campground, abandoned building, or other inadequate accommodation

• Temporarily living in a motel or hotel due to loss of housing, economic hardship or similar reason

• Unaccompanied youth including youth who are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian, such as runaway or youth who have been denied housing by their family

Parent Booklet (National Center for Homeless Education)

This brochure explains the educational rights of children and youth experiencing homelessness and informs parents about ways in which they can support their children's education during times of mobility.

Children have the right to go to school. Learn more about the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
