Four to six years seems an eternity to most middle schoolers. So you might wonder why we would talk with them about life after high school.
College and Career Readiness isn't just about knowing what you want to be when you grow up. Students develop their college and career readiness skills throughout their middle school years by mastering
written and verbal communication
organization
growth mindset
understanding of themselves and others
problem solving
critical thinking
researching
As students develop these skills and start planning for high school, we show students how to discover their strengths and apply them to their future. The immediate future is high school -- What am I good at? What courses should I take? Should I consider BCIT or BTHS or another high school? What clubs and sports allow me to explore my interests? How can jobs and other summer experiences help me identify possible careers?
Down the road, college and careers await. Through classroom lessons typically offered in 8th grade, students begin to acquire the knowledge they need of themselves and of the world of work. These classroom lessons offer inventories that help students match their interests to possible careers. From there, students engage in an in-depth exploration of careers connections to college or vocational education, work/life balance and income.
