Outlook client and exchange server will eventually be decommissioned. But don't panic, virtually everything you have done with Outlook and Exchange you can do with Gmail. Gmail also offers many extra and better features.

Please see this slide show showing how common outlook tasks are completed in exchange. It will give you a good idea of the differences between Outlook and Gmail.
