ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
The Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is an 85-year-old student-governed and operated, non-profit affordable housing cooperative near the University of California at Berkeley. Our mission is to provide quality, low-cost, cooperative housing to students who otherwise might not be able to afford a university education. The BSC houses 1200 students in 17 room-and-board houses and 3 apartment complexes (ranging in size from 17 to 259 students). We provide numerous leadership opportunities to our student members, who perform the majority of the day-to-day functions, working alongside a professional staff of 28, to operate the organization. JOB DESCRIPTION OVERVIEW
The Human Resources Manager is responsible for providing support to the BSC Executive Director in the execution of all Human Resources duties, including overseeing & processing payroll. This is a hands-on, sole HR practitioner position, which calls for a solid HR generalist background. The Human Resources Manager job includes a wide variety of professional-level HR functions, including but not limited to: managing payroll, employee recruitment/hiring, employee orientation, on-boarding & off-boarding, training & professional development, making recommendations regarding benefits plans/programs, administering benefits and compensation programs, employee records management, managing workers compensation claims & leaves of absence, performance management, retirement plan administration, and assisting with employee relations issues. The HR manager advises staff members, supervisors, and other managers about human resources policies and California & Federal labor laws. The Human Resources Manager also participates in the development, improvement, and execution of safety programs, including training and education. The Human Resources Manager will provide regular reports and recommendations to management, and perform other projects as assigned by the Executive Director.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Four-year college degree, BA or BS.
Minimum of four years FTE in a wide range of human resource functions, including HR administration and labor law compliance.
Two years payroll experience, preferably with ADP Workforce Now or ADP Total Source, along with Time & Attendance.
Thorough understanding of California labor law and Federal labor law, as well as human resource best practices.
Significant experience developing and providing individual and group professional development opportunities & training.
Expertise in benefit plan options, design & administration.
Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills.
Superb attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced office environment.
Excellent problem-solving/trouble-shooting skills.
Ability to analyze problems, gather & evaluate data and develop recommendations for improvement.
Desire and ability to work with a diverse array of employees and students.
Effective use of computer applications to achieve business results (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Suite, business database programs, online business applications, etc.
Previous experience with online HRIS database systems, benefits management systems.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
PHR, PHRca, SPHR certification preferred.
SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP also desirable.
Continuing education in HR management or undergraduate HR degree.
Experience with online training and education platforms.
Previous experience in non-profit or cooperative organizations is a plus.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position, with compensation based on prior experience and skill level. Benefits include annual cost-of-living increases, annual performance-based raises and/or bonuses, health and dental insurance for employee and dependents, paid holidays, vacation & sick leave, long-term disability & life insurance, 403b plan.
