September 23, 2011 - News and Class Dues Request
Hello, Classmates!
It was great to have a chance to reconnect with so many ’98-ers at the Inaugural Classes of the 1990s Happy Hour in Providence earlier this year and, more recently, at “A Little Suite for the Little Bride” in New York City. We’re also looking forward to seeing those of you who can make it back to campus for Alumni Fall Weekend at the Classes of ’96 – ’01 Get-together on Saturday October 15th. You can register for the weekend at this link.
With less than two years to go before our 15th reunion, we are writing today to share some exciting news with you: our class was selected as the recipient of Brown’s 2011 Class of the Year Award by the Association of Class Leaders. Our class officers will be presented with the award at the Annual Alumni Recognition Ceremony on Saturday, October 15. Members of our class who are back on campus for Fall Weekend are not just welcome but encouraged to attend the ceremony.
Now, having told you our big news, we would like to ask you to please tell us your news, and also to ask for a small donation to our Class of 1998 “war chest.”
NEWS:
The old Brown Class of 1998 Facebook page was scheduled to be archived, so we’ve established a new page in its place. It’s a closed group. Please join it at this link and post your news on the wall! It’s a great way to connect with your fellow classmates (and stay connected long past the reunion), or send your news to Mike Mancuso and he will post it on Facebook and our Class website. In addition, if you’d like to submit your news to the BAM, you can do so at alumni_magazine@brown.edu
DUES:
Class dues, while modest, allow us to build up our class treasury so that we can offset the costs of future class activities. For example, we’d love to keep the costs as low as possible at our 15th Reunion. This year, we’re requesting $50 — but if you wish to give another amount, that’s wonderful too. Any amount helps!

John Stamler '98 to Run NYC Marathon 6 Months After Open Heart Surgery
Dear Classmates:
We have some news we'd like to share with you. After six major operations in seven years culminating with open heart surgery in May 2010, our classmate, John Stamler, Brown '98, is running the 2010 NYC Marathon on Sunday November 7, 2010.
John had two rare conditions, Atrial Septal Defect (www.asdsurvivors.org) and Von Willebrand’s Disease (www.livingwithvwd.org). There are only 120 Americans with the combination of ASD and VWD. John was diagnosed with VWD when he was six years old and with the congenital heart condition, ASD, in December 2009. There is no cure for VWD but his is very manageable. However, John no longer has ASD thanks to a team at the Cleveland Clinic. Grateful for his health, family and friends, and his amazing medical team, John is running the upcoming NYC Marathon. Along with his surgeon, he also plans to run a marathon next year to mark the one year anniversary of his surgery.
John, who is an inspiration to us all, has asked that we direct anybody with a heart condition and blood disorder his way to speak further. He has graciously offered to pass along his wealth of knowledge and discuss his experiences. Anyone who wishes to reach out to John can reach him via e-mail at John5370@gmail.com. We wish him the very best of luck with his upcoming run and encourage everyone to do likewise.
Ever true,
VP, B'98

Spring 2010: Class of 1998 Wine and Cheese Party in New York City
On May 20th, Lauren Berkeley Freer '98 and Peter Freer '98 (Class Treasurer) hosted a wine and cheese party for the class of 1998. More than 30 classmates in and around New York City met at their apartment in the West Village to enjoy wine, cheese and good company. Everyone recognized friends and acquaintances and had a great time catching up as well as reminiscing. It was wonderful to reconnect in a casual, warm setting. Based on the success of this event, the class officers have started planning additional events for later this year. Please let us know if you are interested in planning a regional event in your area.

"I currently own two restaurants in Manhattan, the Rickshaw Dumpling Bar and we have just recently launched a Dumpling Truck. We bought an old US Postal truck in Pennsylvania and refitted it with a kitchen and painted it red. As it has been up and running for about 6 weeks now, I am still working on it most days, so I would love to see some classmates stop by for some hot dumplings and to catch up! You can check out the schedule for where we are each day at lunch at www.rickshawdumplings.com or you can sign up for twitter updates www.twitter.com/rickshawtruck to get texts to track where we are. Keep an eye out for the red truck! Hope all is well with everyone and great to see so many people at the reunion this past May!"

Grow a Mustache for Charity
Mustaches for Kids is a volunteer-run organization started in Lost Angeles in 1999 to help children’s charities. Each year, participants (“Growers”) raise money by growing totally sweet Mustaches for four weeks during the holiday season. The Growers solicit donations from friends, family, and people in the community; kind of like getting pledges to run a marathon, except here, the race is on your upper lip. And rather than getting in shape, you’re getting, well, a Mustache.
The NYC chapter of Mustaches for Kids kicks off on Shaving Day. On that day—Thursday, November 13, 2008—all Growers must shave off all existing facial hair, in a symbolic “Gentlemen, start your ‘staches” moment:
SHAVING DAY - Thursday, November 13, 8:00pm
Ace Bar
531 E. 5th St. (between Ave. A and Ave. B)
Manhattan (East Village)
We encourage all Growers, potential Growers, and Mustache sympathizers to join us at this event. M4K representatives will be available to answer questions, hand out cool mustache-related goodies, and if necessary, hold you down and shave you.
For the 2008 Growing Season, we will be fundraising for DonorsChoose.org, a not-for-profit web site that turns public school teachers into social entrepreneurs by giving them a venue to submit project proposals for materials or experiences their students need to learn. Mustaches for Kids will be building a “registry” of New York-based classroom projects to fund.
More information can be found at http://www.m4kny.org, and to see a list of other cities with M4K chapters, visit http://mustachesforkids.org. We can also be emailed at sweetstache@m4kny.org.

Shining Through Broken Glass An Ecumenical Concert of Memory and Hope, 70 Years after Kristallnacht
Sunday, November 9th - 7:00 PM
Veterans Memorial Auditorium
1 Avenue of the Arts
Providence, RI
Noted actor and producer Leonard Nimoy will narrate a concert to commemorate Kristallnacht in a one-night only performance called SHINING THROUGH BROKEN GLASS.
SHINING THROUGH BROKEN GLASS, a historic concert of memory and hope exactly 70 years to the day after Kristallnacht, that infamous night in 1938 when the Nazi regime unleashed terror of epic proportions throughout Germany and Austria. SHINING THROUGH BROKEN GLASS is a dramatic and choral concert that will expand appreciation of the achievements of 1000 years of Jewish music, culture and art, and give meaning to the lessons learned from the Holocaust. This concert will feature an ecumenical adult and youth choir of over 200 voices (including Melissa Puius '98) from synagogues, churches, schools and colleges in the tri-state area, four cantorial soloists and a 40-piece professional orchestra. The beautifully restored, historic Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence, Rhode Island will be the venue for this very special performance.
Tickets are $25-$100 (student and group rates available)
