About Us

Valerie Phillips - Co-President

Valerie graduated from Brown with a double concentration in English and American Literature and Women's Studies. Following graduation, she attended Cornell Law School in Ithaca, New York. After a more than decade-long career as a litigator, she began her second act as a legal recruiter. She is currently a Director in the New York office of Mestel & Company. Valerie is a past member of the Board of the Brown Club of New York City, the Board of Governors of the Brown Association of Class Leaders, and the Board of the Brown Alumni Association. She has also volunteered for the Brown Alumni Interviewing Program since graduation (and has not missed an interviewing season in nineteen years as an alumna, sometimes interviewing up to a dozen applicants in person and via Skype), and is a former Worldwide Chair of the Alumni Interviewing Program (then BASC). Valerie currently serves on the Board of the Junior League of Central Westchester. Valerie resides in Scarsdale, New York with her husband, Brent Campbell (IU '99) and their daughters Hannah and Grace (Brown Classes of 2030 and 2033, if she has anything to say about it).

George Patterson - Co-President

E. Peter Freer - Vice President, Finance

Peter graduated from Brown University with Honors in Development Studies in 1998. After gaining work experience and traveling, Peter moved to New York where he joined the Equities Division at Goldman Sachs in 1999. He later became the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Financial Officer at Cooper Hill Partners, a health care dedicated hedge fund as well as at Marble Arch Investments, a global, long/short equity hedge fund. He and his family moved to Barcelona, Spain in 2014 where he is currently living with his wife, Lauren Freer '98, and their two children, Zachary and Julia. At the American School of Barcelona, Peter has volunteered as a math teacher and coach, consulted with the director of the school, and helped to create a development program. Peter is currently the president of the Brown Club of Spain and vice president of finance for his class at Brown. In the past he has worked closely with a variety of non-profits including Grand Street Settlement, Steppingstones, TechnoServe, and the Village Community School.

Mike Mancuso - Vice President, Communications

After graduating from Brown with a degree in biology, Mike was hired as the Director of Public Relations at the Institute for International Sport (IIS) based in Kingston, RI. Following his stint at the IIS, he worked for the Rhode Island Rams Athletic Association (RIRAA) at the University of Rhode Island. While climbing his way to the top at the RIRAA, Mike earned an MBA at URI in 2001. He served as the RIRAA’s Executive Director until March of 2005, when he took a position with Mutual Property in West Warwick, RI as the CFO. While at Brown, Mike was a four-year sports writer and two-year sports editor at the Brown Daily Herald. Since graduating, he has maintained his passion for Brown Athletics as one of the Bears primary broadcasters on ESPN Plus and NESN. Since 2001, Mike has covered Brown basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, volleyball and water polo. In August of 2007, he was hired as the lead play-by-play announcer for Ice Network, broadcasting international figure skating and speed skating through 2018. He can also be seen and heard broadcasting Providence College soccer, basketball, hockey, lacrosse and volleyball on Flo Sports and the Big East Digital Network. And in addition to his work as a Class Leader (Communications Chair), Mike served as a Member-at-Large on the Brown University Association of Class Leaders. Mike, his wife Danielle and their daughters Ella and Anna, currently reside in Cumberland, RI.
